How do I know if it's working?

Post by Ronsil » Fri Nov 13, 2009 10:15 am

I have been trying to do this now for almost 3 months. This month I finally have begun to sleep through the night. I do wake up to adjust my mask for leaks, but fall back to sleep almost immediately. My concern is how do I know if this is working or not? Am I getting the help I need or am I going through all of this for nothing? Any help will be appreciated. Ron

do you feel better? figure that should answer the question...

(but not always). I have been doing it for over 6 months now, and I feel the same...
What keeps me going?
I questioned why I was assigned this device in the first place myself...
I then got a copy of my sleep study results showing a night without a cpap and
a second night with a cpap, and that was what I needed to keep me straight.

Ronsil, it sounds like you are not recording or viewing the data your machine is capable of generating. Being able to see the performance of therapy is useful, and lets you make minor adjustment to improve it. That feed back reinforces the use of these devices for me, and lets you take a more active role in the therapy. If your uncontrolled AHI is 56 and your data is showing less than 5/hour now, you have some idea of whether its working or not.

You are still alive and probably have not started lessons in either Harp or Fire management.

That's the question I keep asking myself. I'm getting worse sleep with cpap on so I keep my cpap off at night so I can get some rest and sleep!

Have you told your doctor or DME (place you got your equipment from)?

It might help if you would put your equipment in your profile and tell us something about your therapy so far.

Ronsil, I've been doing this for 10 years with varying degrees of success. I use mine every night.

This forum has been a great help to me. I haven't used a hose hanger for many years. I started again 3 nights ago after reading hints here, and it instantly made a great difference for me. When I roll over my hose (without hanger) pulls my mask.

good luck. Groups like these forum participants make a great difference.

You get out of it what you are willing to put into it. (Effort) You need to get the software for your machine up and running, then others can help you and you can help yourself, waiting for the medical indrustry to help probably won't get the job done. If it's working you should start to feel better, but that usually takes time as the body has a lot of damage that needs to be repaired, the damage didn't come on overnight.

If you treatment isn't being done correctly then basically you aren't doing treatment. The software can help to tell if the treatment is correct by measuring pressure, leaking (mouth and other), and AHI events. By using a nasal mask you have to be sure you are NOT mouthbreathing, Mouthbreathing defeats your treatment. Jim
