Good Numbers, Good Sleep, STILL Tired?

Post by Komodo » Tue Nov 10, 2009 8:41 am

The past couple of weeks have been confusing, and thought maybe one of you guys have experienced this yourself and could shed a little light on it for me.

All my "numbers" have finally settled down to a constant range, AHI 4.8 thru 5.1 AI ~0~ thru 0.3. I'm sleeping through the nights, getting @ 8 hours every night.

Sounds good, right?

WELL........the problem is that I started to fall asleep unexpectedly again! So far, it's been twice a day, a mid-afternoon "nap", and an early evening "nap", both being unexpected and not intentional!!!
This is the behavior I had BEFORE cpap therapy. As soon as I started therapy 5 months ago, the unexpected falling asleep stopped happening on the first day.

Any ideas as to what's going on with me?

Is mouth-leaking a possibility? (or do you tape your mouth shut?)
If you're losing your therapy air, your therapy is ineffective.

What are your leak numbers?

Leaks are pretty good (for me) 0.2 - 0.4, mostly in the 0.25 area. Pretty sure most of those leaks are from my mouth, not the mask. Considering they're so low, I'm not concerned about them.

Did you ever start to feel really good...or have you just been plugging along hoping to feel better...and then started napping again? some folks say they don't feel really great until their AHI is around 2 or below. any way to tweak your pressure up a bit to see if that helps?

From what I've read about ResMed leaks, anything beyond 0.2 is problematic. To me, it sounds like you're losing your therapy air and essentially not getting any (or very little) therapy......that's why I asked......I noticed you had a nasal mask in your profile. I asked if you taped and you didn't give a definite answer......but apparently you're not from your statement about "....leaks from my mouth".

Suggestions (not necessarily in this order):
*Tape your mouth shut.
*Get a full face mask.

If your CPAP therapy is """treated"""" and you still feel tired/fatiuge it's possible you could be experiencing EDS (excessive daytime sleepiness). This is something a small number of apnea suffers can have, I know, I'm one of them. See your Dr. he/she can help. Good Luck

Komodo, consider getting a hybrid-style mask...I love my RespCare Hybrid. They cover the mouth and have pillows, and do not cover the nose or touch the forehead...quite nice. The other hybrid-style is the ResMed Liberty.
ResMed S9 range 9.8-17, RespCare Hybrid FFM
