Post by YELOOCD » Tue Nov 10, 2009 7:52 am

I tried to use the L Mirage Quattro and for some reason ( I think size was why ) I switched to Fisher& Paykel XL which apeared to be better the first night ...havent used any mask for mor than a few hours if that ...I cant keep buying these things. If you have a XL or a a big L let me know what it is and I will attempt to get it...

I am using the Swift LT. I guess you could say I have a big head, I wear a size 8 hat I haven't tried any of the masks, just the nose pillows.

I am a size 7 3/4 hat, and use a size M Quattro mask. I'm not sure that the upper skull size means much when trying to find a mask that just covers your nose and mouth. The size of your nose bridge, and the shape of the cheek bones and jaw are really the important factors.

I thought this was going to be another post about "is it common for people with apnea to have a large head?" which I think has been asked several times already and the answer is generally yes.

I'm an average-sized woman and wear a size 7 and 5/8 hat!

But I wear a nasal pillows mask so I can't help with your question unless you want to know about adjusting the straps on those.

The res med mask felt good...light...but they couldn't come up with a xl ...I am just big,...head ...everything...nearly everything...tall and 300 lbs likely to be the majority of the problem ...but I had throat nose surgery... I don't love the new mask but I got to give it a chance...they are expensive ...I have the res med mask and its useless sitting there but I paid $$ give it a try.....

Re: Do you have a large head? choking at night

Post by YELOOCD » Mon Nov 23, 2009 4:25 pm

Same ol same ol I am still trying to keep it on all night ..Tried a different mask, it sucked though I dont keep the res med mirage on any longer ..it seems small.
Though I havent ever in the 6 months ( aprox) wore it more than 3 hours I did kinda have a thought ....I have had the surgery to fix my nose and throat (uvialplasty septuplasy..spelled wrong) and it seems to me I am waking up and pulling the mask off (not totally awake or I would try to put it back on) while choking on flem or saliva ...does this happen to you if so is there any resolution at all?? I tried gargling salt water, I put a bandaid over a strap thinkig I may feel it, different angles of pillows, trazadone, ambien, benadryl, nyquil, melatonin ...probably other sleep pills but I go to sleep ok I just seem to choke ( or at least it seems at this point that is it) I would like to wait until after the new year when the new amount on the flex spend kicks in to go to the Dr but I may not make it if I dont wake up on of these mornings ... I stopped smoking ...finally. I know it takes time to heal up .................. any ideas I would hang upside down in a closet if I would actually feel awake in the morning.

Do you have a lot of sinus drainage? Allergies? Congestion? If I have thick phlegm that makes me cough, I drink more water; sometimes take guafenisin to thin it, so I don't cough as it drains -- could this be happening?

Head size...is the headgear not large enough? If so, PADACHEEKS might be able to help you out, she makes custom stuff for masks (that's her name, you could PM her).

If it's the mask itself, check out the RespCare Hybrid that covers the mouth and has nasal pillows...it does not cover the nose or touch the forehead. It comes with 3 sizes of oral cushion, 3 sizes of pillows that can be adjusted to 2 heights. Makes it easier to get a good fit...might work for you. The headgear is pretty large (my head is small and the straps all overlap).

Its possible since the surgery its all kinda new, I have never been able to blow my nose right, and I sorta can now but I have a lot less gag than before so even sitting up I cough because of spit or phloem or whatever back there...I will see about getting something with guaffisen (misp) the head gear is fine ..the mask I have listed is the one I switched to and then back th the resmed quattro... thanks for the advice I will get back as soon as I try it
