CPAP Newbie

Post by JCJXXL » Sat Nov 07, 2009 1:48 pm

Hello all. Brand new here and am so thrilled with my CPAP I felt like posting my experience.
Ever since I can remember (even as a kid) I've been a loud snorer. I've had friends and family claim they had the loudest snorer in their home and once they heard me they realized their family was lucky not to have me sleeping at their house

I'm 37 now and it's almost like it has all caught up with me. I've been so exhausted I didn't realize just how bad off I was. Everyday around 4pm it was a battle to keep my eyes open. I would wake up exhausted. I used to tell friends it was like my whole day had a dream feeling to it, like things weren't real. No one knew what I meant by that.

About a month ago I went in for a sleep study and had averaged 94 "obstructions" per hour. Went back a second time and this time they hooked me up to a CPAP. I woke up at 4am the next morning wired out of my mind and felt like I could build a house in day. Since then it's almost like my body body got a taste of how it should be sleeping and it has been a real you know what getting out of bed at all since then.

Yesterday I finally got my CPAP and last night's sleep was great. I feel like I got good quality sleep. I woke refreshed, alert and ready to go.
Anyway, I'm just so excited I had to share. It's like I'm getting my life back. I can't wait to see how things progress over the next several weeks.

Thanks for letting me share.

Hi,

Welcome to the forum, and congrats on having some success right up front. Some folks get this boost right off the starting line, and others seem to struggle for months to start feeling better. I guess everyone is different.

I know what you mean about getting your life back. I had so much extra time where I was awake after getting on CPAP that I didn't know what to do with myself the first few weeks. I had to invent projects to keep myself occupied. It is amazing what one can accomplish when they are awake.

Thanks for the replies everyone.

Well this was my 3rd night and even though I went to bed around 11pm I woke up at 4:30am ready to go.Is this normal/acceptable? I keep telling myself to not get hung up on the numbers of hours of sleep but rather the quality of sleep I'm getting. Just curious.

LOL! I did the same thing in the beginning. Give it some time and you'll find that you will sleep longer. I also found that I only need about 6 hours of sleep a night to feel great in the morning, but it took me a couple of months to get there.

Hard to say if it's normal...everyone is so different. Sounds like your therapy is working extremely well though. Congrats! And welcome aboard. If you hit any snags along the way...be sure to lean on this forum to help!

Welcome and so glad you seem to be having an easy time adjusting. It would be great if you could get the software & card reader to really monitor the therapy you're getting.

JCJXXL, great to hear you're off to a successful start. If you're happy, then no need to change anything. If you're curious, and want to know more, though, or if you're a numbers geek, I'd recommend you get the software and card reader for your machine.
