day 2. hose cover or heated hose?

Post by xiola » Thu Oct 29, 2009 8:04 am

so night two.. things are going great. ive felt so much better the past two days. im awake, not half asleep. wasn't ready to fall asleep at 7 pm last night like i usually am. quite possible that it's all in my head and im not really seeing results this fast. I'll buy it either way I'm sleeping straight through the night and really having no problems falling asleep.

on night one, there was a bit of water in the hose. no big deal. i emptied the hose out in the morning.
night two.. omg. water.. everywhere. it woke me up about 6 am gurgling around in the mask... i just took the mask off and slept for the last half hour without it (shame on me).

So the Rainout article in My Wisdom has some suggestions....

*put machine lower than bed. done! it's under my bedside table almost on the floor

*Turn down humidity. I have my humidity set at 3, night 1 my throat got really scratchy and i coughed a lot. night 2 was a little better, but i almost think it needs to be set at 4 to be ideal. I havent turned it up because i want to solve the water problem first.

*raise temperature of the room. nooooooooooo! i cannot sleep when i am warm. Not only is my bedroom the coldest room in the house, but i LOVE it that way.

so im looking at buying either a hose cover, or a heated hose. Before i spend $150 on a heated hose, i was wondering...would a hose cover work?

I'm thinking probably not, since my bedroom sometimes gets into the low 60's at night in the winter. and i have a 10 ft hose. I think i read somewhere that the longer the hose, the more likely you are to have water in it.

So, given those condtions (very cold room, long hose, and long midwest winter) do you think a hose cover would cut it?

My experience is no. Get the heated hose. I got one from cpapusa.com and was successfull in persuading my insurance carrier to pay for it in network.
I basically sent a letter to them explaining there was no place to purchase that they consider in-network and if they provided a vendor or a compatible product I would.

They altered the claim to be considered in-network and said I could refer to it in future purchases.

I need higher humidifier setting myself. A few nights ago I had some rain out. To see if covering the hose was all I needed I just cut the toes out of some old tube socks that belong to my husband, slipped them over the hose and secured with rubber bands. You could maybe try that to get an idea if a nice hose cover would work before springing the big bucks on a heated hose. The socks I used were old and worn out and thin but they were still successful. I think I will try to find some nice fuzzy ones that aren't all stretched out and do the same with them. I don't use a 10 ft hose though. So it may or may not work for you. I also cannot stand a warmer bedroom.

I have a fleece cover and it makes nearly no difference in rain-out. Guess I'll have to save up for the heated hose since I don't think they are covered by my plan.

I know there is a heated hose that can be purchased for about $100, give or take, but has anyone seen a heated hose cover? Something like a electric blanket for a hose. I would be interested in something like that. If not I may have to try the reptile heater thing and see how that goes. The standard hose cover doesn't make much difference that I can tell.

I use a fleece cover on my cpap hose...AND...on the small hose on my mask...! I need both covered to prevent rain out. It works for me...but then...I keep my bedroom temp at 68...not as cold as you.

I have covers for both large and small hoses, and then I have the hose more or less under the covers with me in a moderately-heated waterbed. I have not experienced rainout since, but as I'm in California things may certainly be different in other climates.

You won't be sorry. I've had my heated hose for over 3 years with no problems at all. I have mine plugged into a timer. I have it set to go on at my normal bed time and shut off when my alarm goes off in the morning. Not only do I not get any rainout, but my nose stays toasty warm all night.

My partner loves it freezing in the room, so I have a heated hose and an additional fleece cover on it.

I finally decided to order the Sleepzone. I don't get huge accumulations of water, but enough to wake me up and cause me to remove the nasal pillows and sprinkle the water out. Yucch! My only source of leaks is when excess moisture interferes with the seal, and as a result, I usually use the humidifier in passive mode. Its worth $139 to solve that problem.

At night my bedroom is at 60 degrees F, and I have no rainout problem, so the issue may stem from another cause. good luck figuring it out!
