I am having day surgery next month, any advice?

Post by Froro » Thu Oct 22, 2009 8:52 pm

Is there anything you all may have as far as prep advice as I go into my surgery? I will be put under general anesthesia for about an hour. I was filling out some pre-op forms today and it did ask if I had sleep apnea.

Should I bring my machine in with me? I have a pre-op appointment the day before my surgery. Going in for D&C and balloon abalation, nothing too significant but will hopefully make my life easier.

Thanks in advance

If it were me, I'd call whoever is doing the surgery and schedule a chat. I'd want an anesthesiologist to deliver drugs & monitor me. I'd want my own someone to hook me up to my xPAP in recovery...likely my mom whom I'd trust to fight the system to ensure I got hooked up properly and my machine turned on while I was in recovery and then back in my room.

It's being done in hospital with Anasthesiologist. I mentioned it to my surgeon today and he said to bring it up in my preop appointment.
Only my husband is going to be hanging around the hosp. Will they let him into recovery?

I'm making an appointment with my family doc next week to discuss. I need a physical done prior to the surgery anyway. So, it's in recovery they will let me use it I gather.

I just had surgery, but since my apnea is mild (snoring and waking myself up is a far greater issue). I chose not to bring my CPAP until I got to the room. In surgery your are intubated so no need. In recovery if I had someone I trusted to put it on and make sure it was right I guess I might have brought it. BUT my biggest fear is that they put it on and my mouth opens and I am having a wind tunnel in my nose and out my mouth. I really hat ff masks so I figured with mild apnea I could just feel lousy for a few hours. I had a friend bring it to my room where I could and did use it when I was coherent.

If you have severe apnea, I think you had really consider having it in recovery.

I recently had surgery, anesthesiologist required I bring in APAP. They put it on me in recovery. I initially did not want to take it as I was concerned about handling, proper use, risk of loss. I unfortunately had trouble waking up from anesthesia and was glad I had it with me afterwards. It was well taken care of...only problem they didn't put water in humidifier, which was no big deal and was done when I finally woke up. Review of software I had the highest AHI/HI I have ever had,(and that was with APAP) I knew the time frame of what went on with me because of software data....and I was glad I had it with me in the end. No, your husband will not be allowed into recovery. With your procedure you will likely go from stage 1 recovery back to your post op area if you are to be discharged same day. Recovery has multiple patients and staff is focussed on monitoring patients waking up....for procedures and multiple stage recoveries family members are often allowed at the end stage of recovery. Once you are awake in recovery, you are typically moved out quickly for outpatient procedures and your husband will be called back to join you. Good luck.

It can take more drugs to knock you out when you have sleep apnea.Think on the bright side it could be an esophagus abalation and the doc might ask you not to use your cpap for a while.

I just had Acl/mcl/meniscus surgery and they told me to bring it. I dont think they used it, but they wanted it there just in case. So, make sure you are using it all the time in the weeks before surgery, and then bring it with you. Give it to the nurse during the pre-op stuff, they will probably check it out, and give it to the surgical staff. Just dont forget to take it home with you after surgery! Good luck!

How soon can Oral be performed after the D&C with balloon abalation? I am so "in the mood" but the doctor said No sex for 6-8 weeks. Im afraid to ask about the oral...

YES definitely bring your machine. I had arthroscopy recently, and after the Versed, they put the autopap on me in recovery. You will be having heavy sedation for your type of procedure, so definitely do have the 'pap.

I just saw this question. If I am not too late: Take your machine with you in case you need to stay over night. I had surgery, and they had difficulty putting the breathing tube in, they ended up using a childrens size. I imagine that may be from my blockage. Anyway, now I have to keep a letter with me mentioning the problem. Just remind the anesthesiologist you have sleep apnea.

I just had my preop appointment and met with the anesthetist. All set, bring cpap...he said they will only put it on if I need it. I told him I insist on having it on, the nurses have a lot of people in recovery and won't be able to monitor whether I have an apnea or not. He grumbled a bit but I held firm.

Let's hope that translates on friday to them actually putting the thing on me.
