Stop panic attacks without meds

Post by jeckston » Thu Oct 15, 2009 4:33 am

Most people think that to overcome panic and phobias, you are supposed
to 'face your fears' Well that's a load of crap. The reason you feel
panic is that a young part of you is terrified and doesn't trust the
older parts of you to look after it. Forcing that young part to do
something it clearly doesn't want to do will make the panic worse.

Try this: Next time you panic, remove yourself from whatever it is
that's causing it. I panic on buses and trains, I don't force myself
to take trains, if I take a bus, I say to that part, "If you want to
get off, we will get off". When I go to the cinema/theatre, I pre-book
an aisle seat, I find out where the exit is and I say to myself "If
you want to leave, we'll leave" I have been doing this for several
years now and it really works. I can sit in waiting rooms now,
something I could never do before, because that young part of me knows
that if it wants to get up and go, we will, without hesitation. It has
learned to trust me. In turn, I can reason with it sometimes when I
really want to stay and I can be really kind to it and even ask it to
try and be OK (this mostly works, but I still have work to do on
this). I never take medication for panic, I think that this is really
disrespectful to the parts of you that are trying to communicate, you
just have to listen to them and eventually they will be less
terrified, learn to trust you and panic attacks do get much less. I
know that one day, I wont need to have them at all any more.

Good Luck!

Wow.
I wish it was really this simple. If it were...I could have saved a fortune on all that therapy and those home-study programs.
Duh.

I panic when I read posts like that. My wife is rushing to Walgreen's to refill my diazepame. God, I hope she's back soon!

Works for depression in some cases as well. If you have depressive episodes caused by "triggers", avoiding them to begin with and immediately diverting your attention elsewhere when you encounter a trigger will make a significant improvement in your mental health.

Sounds easy. Time to fire the shrink, the cognitive behavior therapist, and stop taking Xanax or Ativan. I hope this post was a joke, as panic attacks are certainly NO joke.

jeckston I believe what you are saying does work for some people either completely or to some extent. However when dealing with anxiety and panic i do not believe there is a one size fits all cure.
Good luck to anyone suffering from anxiety, I just keep telling myself there is a cure and i just have to find it

I'm glad you found resolution! This method does work for some who know themselves well. With my Jungian slant, I too have been able to dialog with these disparate internal processes for behavioral changes. When my mom was having panic attacks, she would get so caught up in the panic aspect she wasn't able to dialog with herself...no pretty and a challenge for her to deal with. Doc finally decided it was triggered by her skipping meals causing low blood sugar levels so she ensures she eats regularly and they are a thing of the long distant past. Oh, I nagged her into taking Coromega fish oils too

Hey guys,

You have "been had". You are wasting your time trying to dialogue with a spammer. "jeckston" joined quite a few forums early this morning and posted this same nonsense blurb.

I expect you to be more skeptical in the future when a just-joined posts such O.T. crap.

Oh, look at Mowgli's post and turn your TV on. He is not joking! Very scary!!

I hope the kid lives to brag about being abducted in a UFO.

Not my real plate but i found out on the Arizona dept of motor vehicles website you can create your own plate image to see what it looks like. I had recently got a personalized plate with my two sons names on.
I'm having second thoughts about doing that now as a co worker of mine pointed out that people may think that one name is mine and the other is my boyfriends

Some panic attacks can be cured without meds. I used to have panic attacks often. Twice, I wound up in the ER because family and coworkers thought I was having a heart attack.

Anyway, several years ago, I was seeing an employee counselor at work over a problem I was having with my supervisor. The counselor found out about my panic attacks and showed me how to control them with breathing exercises and relaxation techniques. They worked for me, but everyone is different. Might be worth looking into though.
