Placebo?

Post by swknight » Fri Oct 09, 2009 3:33 pm

I was recently diagnosed with severe OSA and was able to get a machine with the help of family. My company chose to explicitly exclude anything related to sleep apnea on our insurance plan so I am paying for diagnosis and treatment out of my pocket.

Over the last month, I have had extreme mood swings, daytime sleepiness, loss of appetite, really bad migraines, a disconnected from reality feeling - the list goes on and on.

So I just got my CPAP machine today and since I've not slept good in a month, I thought I would take a nap with it.

I got everything set up and slept from 1PM to 3:15PM. I woke up and things seemed "clearer"?

Is this a placebo effect?

Any feedback is appreciated.

Some people have immediate relief, others it takes some time. You may have just had a "good night" If you don't continue to wake up the way you felt today, don't give up on the machine. There will be ups and downs over the next month or so, but with time the good nights will be more common then the bad nights.

Adequate oxygen for your brain while you sleep is always helpful for feeling better.

Definitely not a placebo effect!

And... you can't have a placebo effect without a placebo .

You know the mind is a very powerful tool. You obviously are determined to make this a success given what you had to go through to get things done without insurance. Mix the powerful tool (your mind) with the proven effectiveness of the machine and your strong positive attitude and I would think you would expect success..

If I nap longer than an hour without my machine (by accident) I feel awful. I see no reason not to expect that I would feel better if I nap with the machine.

It sounds like you are off to a successful journey with cpap therapy. I have been at it for two months now and I can relate to how you feel. Yesterday as I was driving to the store and singing along with the radio (something I haven't felt like doing for a long, long time) I realized how much the sleep deprivation had impacted everything in my life over the past few years. I think I am going to have a party to thank my family and friends for putting up with me!

Congratulations. I don't think it's placebo, but the important thing is that you feel better. After my sleep study and titration, I woke up feeling refreshed and hungry, and didn't remember feeling that way for a long time. hours. And that was only 4 hours.

I doubt it is a placebo effect, but I think the placebo effect probably has some relationship to how we do on our therapies. When I got my machine, my doc instructed me to go home and take a nap. "Don't wait until night-time," he said. That first nap with CPAP was *astounding.*
