I'm interested in looking at my data for the first time. I have an older Remstar Pro 2 which I think provides the more detailed data.
Also I'm considering buying an M-series Auto CPAP with A-flex (DS510). Can I expect differences in the data collected from these two?
Then, do I need exactly the card reader provided with the software, or are there generic devices which will work with a Windows box?
Similarly, which software would be capable of displaying data, or preferable based on cost?

data capture questions
Re: data capture questions
The cost for it all depends on where you buy it from. I know that host will price match.
The only software that you can buy from most places is the encore viewer which is all that most need. Some want the Pro version of that software, but it is hard to find. You might be able to find a copy on ebay, or a member might send you a copy.
I have an M Series Pro, and an M Series Auto, the info from them both is different, but you should be able to use the same software and card reader on them both.
I could be wrong on this, and I know that if I am, the more knowledgeable folks here will correct me.

Re: data capture questions
You will need the special card reader. Generic won't work. This is the best price I have found.

Encore Viewer software is available for purchase to the patient. The basic data is the same from either the Remstar Pro or the M Series APAP auto with the exception of Flow Limitations and Vibratory snore data. The Pro machine is a straight CPAP, one pressure and it does not give Flow limitations or snore data. The Auto unit will make this data available in auto mode but if you use it in cpap mode the data is not available.
Encore Pro is the software available to DME or doctor. Not available to the patient unless blackmarket. It used to be available to the patient. The information shown is about the same as with Viewer but you can also use JSkinners Encore Pro Analyzer with Encore Pro (Analyzer doesn't work with Viewer).
You need Windows XP or Vista for either unless you rig up something special if you mainly use another OS.
I have Encore Viewer and Pro and Analyzer. Feel free to PM me if you have some specific questions. I might be able to help.
I recently got a second machine and got the Auto with AFlex. Had been using the Auto with CFlex (both M series).
I like both but really like the AFlex. That exhale feature is very smooth. In my opinion it feels just like natural breathing and very easy to exhale against. Though to be honest, I can handle exhale with no relief also.

Re: data capture questions
The report for the apap and the pro 2 are similar but the charts of events versus pressure such as at the bottom of this report are lacking with the pro 2. I am just picking one of my apap reports I already had online.

This is a pro 2 report - not mine - however he added comments in yellow - this is more than just one day - mine above is one day to show the chart on the bottom is all - notice there are a few more things reported on the APAP also (my apap is a tank not mseries)

For the Pro 2 encore pro 1.3 or later should work. I use EP 1.4 myself. Encore viewer will also work. You need an OS that will work with the software. EP 1.5 or later needs XP. Only EP 1.8 or viewer will work with Vista. As was mentioned you need the mako 3500 card reader. Another source is - the 3000 is serial not usb and should work too

Vista 64 bits has kinks to work out.
If you google encore viewer there is a sponsored link for the best price for the viewer card reader package.
