Humidifyer use winter vs summer?

Post by eloise1253 » Thu Sep 24, 2009 8:34 am

Hello, Boardies!

I want to start using my humidifyer again. When I was first fitted last June, I got such bad rainout & tube popping, even after adjusting water levels & temp DOWN, that I stopped using the humidifyer for the summer. Do you long-time users find that the humidifyer is better in the winter months? Or hasn't it mattered? What about the tube--do you recommend getting the tube wrap, or is that pretty much unnecessary once you've figured out the best setting for your machine? I figure I'll just reconnect it and give it a try. I have friends who have never used a humidifyer on their CPAP and don't see the need--any opinions?

Thanks for the feedback!

I think it depends. For me, I use humidifier all the times otherwise I will get a dry mouth when I wake up in the morning. But in winter, the situation is definitely worse than in summer.

I generally use heated humidity in the winter months (I'm in Canada), and pass over humidity (water in the chamber but no heat setting - or 0 heat setting) most of the rest of the year.

Even in the winter I don't have the heat set past 2.

I do however, have the F & P stand alone humidifier on my main machine and it handles humidity better that integrated ones. I have an integrated one on my travel/backup machine but I have not travelled with it in the winter.

I don't use it in the summer. It's there but turned off with the tank empty. In the winter, it's set at the lowest setting, and when the weather is a bit warmer I fill it but leave the heat off.

When I travel, I don't bring the humidifier, even in the winter.

I use it in the winter with a setting of 2. In the summer I have the tank filled with water but don't have the humidifier turned on. Works for me. I live in Minnesota.

I use my humidifier all the time regardless of the weather and season. I would definitely suggest a heated hose and wrap. This way you will not have rain out issues and you can set the humidifier setting regardless of the temperature in your room. I did not like the solution of turning down the humidifier or increasing the temperature of my room to fix the issue. To me that seems like a cop out spread by manufacturers that have not explored a solution to their limitation. I like it cold in my room when I sleep and I like comfortable humidity settings in my CPAP. You can have both with a heated and wrapped hose.
