EPR and C-Flex: Help me, Please?

Post by snyderm » Sat Aug 22, 2009 9:54 am

Can someone who has a Resmed machine with EPR or a Respironics machine with C-flex please describe to me what it feels like when the EPR or C-Flex is enabled? I am trying to make myself knowlegable about what CPAP machine I want, and my major problem seems to be that my lungs ache a little bit after trying to exhale against the pressure of the machine.

Can you actually feel the pressure ease off after you inhale and start to exahale with these features enabled? Can someone please describe them? Does this feature stay on after you are asleep?

I use EPR set at 1, which reduces pressure during exhalation by 1cm. (There are other settings of 2 or 3, which reduce pressure during exhalation by 2 and 3cm respectively.) I've tried all three, and I find that 1 gives me just enough relief that it feels more like natural breathing. My advice is to get a machine with either EPR or Flex, as you have the option of using it or not. I can use my CPAP w/o EPR, but it feels more comfortable with it.

I have the CFlex. It has 3 settings. 1, 2 and 3 with 3 being the greatest exhalation relief and 1 being the least.
It simply lessens the pressure that you have to exhale against. It is hard to describe. To be honest I started at CFlex 2, then quickly went to 1 and in 2 weeks turned it off all together. I didn't need it.

I have the M Series with A-Flex. When I got it, the DME had it set up to use C-Flex (it does both). I tried A-Flex but I didn't like it as well. It feels like you are just breathing normally, without a machine. The A-Flex was even easier to breathe with but it made my lungs feel like they were empty. That's the only way I could think to describe it. I tried it for 3 nights and didn't sleep as well with it and went back to C-Flex.
