Newbie wonders if there is a mask that works!!

Post by pattyo » Thu Aug 20, 2009 12:26 pm

Hello,
I have been trying for almost 3 months to get acclimated to my bipap and have yet to find a mask that is comfortable and that doesn't leak. I started using the liberty with nasal pillows and it seemed to work for a few days, and then became so uncomfortable by my chin I just can't wear it. I am so frustrated. So now I am going to call my DME again and see what I can do. I have complex sleep apnea and am a mouth breather, so I think I need a full face mask. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Patty

Is the Liberty the only mask you have tried in the 3 months?
It would be helpful to know which other ones you have tried (if any?)

The ResMed Ultra Mirage Full Face mask and the Fisher & Paykel HC432 seem to be at the top of the heap with most ppl on the board from what I've read. I know I like my UMFF. I've also tried the F&P HC431 (predecessor to the 432) but it had a small leak near the top that I couldn't get rid of. I just tried it on again last night and that mask is very comfortable because your face kind of fits into the mask instead of having the mask sit on top of your face- more surface area so there's less pressure with greater surface distribution.

Try another mask. Took me 6 masks in 8 weeks before I could find one that worked to allow me to sleep with it 100% all night every night.

There are several free mask test drives being run by forum members. Check below in my signature block for links to them.

Good luck!

I currently have a stash of Nasal Aire II cannulas in Small or Extra Small. Please PM me if you would like them. I'm interested in bartering for something strange and wonderful that I don't currently own. Or a Large size NAII cannula. :)

For what it's worth - for me it did take several weeks before my face "toughened up" enough to where the skin wasn't red and sore and painful.

If you don't seem to fare better on other masks and all else is fine other than the painful area on your chin you may want to consider giving it a couple of weeks and see if you "toughen up" as well. I'm very much willing to bet that you will as it seems to be a common thing amongst many new users.

Just a thought!

Uncomfortable how? Irritated skin? Too warm & sticky? Didn't fit my chin? Straps rubbing?

EDIT: picky picky JDM ...Didn't fit your chin?... There happy now? Not sleep deprived, just can't SEE my own booboos (need new glasses as well as an APAP)

Muse--

Patty was uncomfortable because her mask didn't fit your chin?

What am I missing?

(And that I'm sleep deprived excuse is beginning to wear a little thin. )

You might also want to try some microfoam or other tape to protect the sensitive areas.
