PAPCap Video

Post by SleepGuy » Wed Aug 19, 2009 8:31 am

As suggested by a number of people, I have finally manged to get a decent video posted about the PAPCap:

Disclaimer: No offense intended by my reference to mouth taping and the use of denture cream to be "crazy." It's just that people are taking matters into their own hands beause the industry has not solved the mouth leaking problem.

Great Video, Brett! Very informative and detailed. I noticed at the end that you quickly demonstrated how a full face mask is applied over the PAPCAP assembly. I always thought the PAPCaps were for those who used nasal masks in order to keep their mouths closed during therapy. What benefit might be derived from a mouthbreather who uses a full face mask (Quattro) wearing a PAPCap?

You are generally correct--that's just the mask I happened to have. However, one problem I have with FFM is that there's nothing to control how "open" my mouth is and my Quattro leaks like crazy if my mouth is open too much. So the chinstrap sets a bottom limit for the jaw. It also keeps my cheeks from blowing out. Honestly the only time I have ever been able to sleep with my Quattro has been in conjunction with the PAPCap, and even then I don't care for the Quattro.

Interesting. I have to admit that wearing my Quattro has been, at times, a challenge. It's like a balancing act between keeping too much pressure off the bridge of my nose yet sealing it effectively from leaks; to keeping too much pressure off my cheeks and chin so that the seal will inflate, yet having it seal tightly enough to prevent leaks in those areas.

Of all the full face masks I have tried, however, the Quattro was the only one that got my leak numbers fairly consistently within acceptable ranges.

I have only tried a nasal mask on time for about two hours and that was during a sleep study. The technician could not overcome my mouth breathing with chin straps, so we gave up.

A constructive criticism from someone that's had some experience in marketing; never bad mouth the competition to sell your product. You make great products that fill a niche and help us CPAP sufferers, you can market & sell your products on their own merits. You can show how they are superior to what's available. Outright calling the options & competition junk & saying they just don't work expresses a certain level of unprofessionalism from a salesmanship/marketing standpoint. Think "my product is superior because...." I wouldn't have chimed in if I didn't wish you success in your business and hope you don't take this in a negative manner.

Yes, thanks Brett! - very well described and demonstrated...first chance I get, I'm going to get your PapCap. I've looked at your previous info on it and wasn't quite sure, but this latest offering is more definitive. AND thank-you for the cotton!!!!

MDBarthe, with the full face mask (I use the Quattro also and love it ) I find the continual incoming force of air needs to be softened or else I'm not comfortable (so tape over a piece of doubled over T-shirt cotton to place on my lips - but it is haphazzard and I worry it will block the air flow (have on occasion awakend with tape askew and fabric bunched.)

Point being, when using my full-face mask, I need something to soften the force of air on my face PLUS, often times I've mouth breathed when the tape/fabric has slipped, and the blast of air into my mouth has caused it to be uncomfortably dry - I've got so many other problems (LOL!) that adding dental to the list isn't appealing. I use a dry mouth toothpaste at night, and while I am sure it helps, it can't hold up to Force 11 for hours on end.

Also intended as a constructive response from someone who appreciates and benefits from your products:
Bret, I'm not sure that the video flows logically from your showing the proven fact that chin straps still allow air to leak through the mouth, to the point that papcap solves the problem. Any chin strap will allow air to escape through the teeth, regardless of the position or angle of the strap. So it might be more accurate to go ahead and identify your product as a solid enhancement for use of full face masks, to keep our traps closed within the space of the mask and reduce the FFM leaking. To imply that the papcap will prevent mouth breathing with a nasal mask or nasal pillow, and eliminate the need for taping or denture strips seems to be very very misleading.

Hey, sleepguy.....you left out the best Papcap.
The one that replaces headgear for a FFM.

What's up w/that??

I could not....nor will I ever again, face my cpap therapy w/out my Papcap.

Just say NO to neoprene.

Thanks guys. You've raised some very good points. I have been planning on re-taking this one because it's just way too long anyway, so these are helpful comments. I have thick skin so don't worry about how I take criticism. I'm just a dumb lawyer trying to figure this all out so I'm very used to a lot of "back and forth" to get to a solution.

Carbonman: There is a supplemental video about the PAPCap PLUS so it's all there....
