How to test a mask for previous usage?

I recently received a mask I bought on Cpapauction.com which was listed as new and unopened. The parcel arrived intact, but I noticed that the seller had put 'used' on the customs declaration. When I opened the box, the plastic bag holding the mask was open as was the bag holding the flight manual. I have concerns about using a used mask given the existence of non-sterilizable prions and other fine microorganisms which might cause me to lose even more of my fragile health.

The vendor insists that he shipped the mask in a closed bag and that it was new and wants no further discussion of the matter.

Does anyone know of a way to determine whether the mask was used or not? One idea I had was to dip it into a hydrogen peroxide bath to check for the presence of biological residue, but I am not to sure what value that would have as I have handled the mask.

If the package had to go through US customs ... it is possible that they opened it. I have bought stuff online that US customs then opened (and damaged).

If the declaration says "used" you can take a picture and send it to the seller. If the seller still refuses to work with you I guess you can give him a bad rating. If you payed with credit card, you may be able to get your money back.

So hard to tell as to what you should do and what you can do. Best-o-luck anyways.

I thought that if Customs opened something, they had to do something to the package so that you were informed of that. And I doubt that they would open the plastic that would surround something like a mask. Though I could be wrong on that part.

Are you saying there are microorganisms (prions) that can survive BOILING WATER? If so, well, maybe you are right to be afraid.

I'd definitely boil the mask for 5 minutes in a large pot of water at full rolling boil, then air dry.

If you are still concerned about the micro organisms, I strongly urge you not to buy anywhere but a reputable DME selling NEW equipment.

You can recoup your cost by re-selling this mask on cpap auction, and being truthful in your advertising.
