Ultra Mirage FF Mask Leak Fixes

Post by bigheadr » Wed Aug 31, 2005 7:33 am

I just had the worst night in the two months that I have been on CPAP. My new Ultra Mirage FF Mask started to leak in the middle of the night and kept me up after that trying to adjust it for leak. All of my number from my 420S and Silverlining was higher than it has ever been. I don't understand since when I go to sleep I don't notice any leaks and then I wake up. Do you folks have any recommendations? I got a Large Ultra Mirage FF Mask because I thought that it was more comfortable than the Medium. Maybe I need to change it again for a Medium but I don't understand why it is leaking when it seems to not be when I go to bed. Does the seal change during the night if I move? I sleep on my back and I might move my head once and while. Even my wife sleep in the other bedroom last night when I started to adjust for the leaks in the middle of the night. I will need to go back to my Swift tonight so that I get a good night sleep.

That was my experience with the Mirage FF. NOTHING I did worked, it just always leaked. Unless I kept my head totally still of course (really realistic) I tried an ace bandage around my ComfortFull last night, and couldn't get it to work around the exhalation port *shrug* I thought this might stablize it a bit.

My experience with the Comfort Full was just plain painful so I took it back and traded it for an Ultra Mirage. It didn't hurt my nose as bad but I had leaks galore! I've tried the straps loose and tight and all places in between and it just still leaks. I've bought the Targe Shapeable Pillow and an Tempurapedic Memory Foam Pillow and they don't help with leaks either. The Hans Rudolph Mask is looking better to me. I've just been burned by the other Full Face Masks so I'm a little skeptical that any full face mask would work especially when the Hans Rudolph looks so uncomfortable but you can't really tell by looks. It seems that most people on this forum really like the Hans Rudolph. I may get my courage up and buy one for my Christmas present to me.

Ultra Mirage FF

Post by FMichael4 » Wed Aug 31, 2005 7:03 pm

As a new cpap user, I have all of 5 nights under my belt......er on my face....with the Ultra Mirage Full Face mask. I didn't especially want a full face mask but that's what was on my prescription.

The first few nights I had a lot of problems with mask leaks. I have had much better results the last two nights when I found the right adjustment for me. At first, I had the mask way too tight. The mask does not need to be all that tight to get a good seal. I still get occasional leaks, though, and I want to try a nasal or pillow mask.

I have been reading many posts about masks in the last few days and it is becoming clear to me that masks may be as different as people are. One person's ideal mask seems to be another person's poison.

There is a mask sizing tool on cpap.com that provides some feedback on whether a particular mask may be a good fit or not but it is difficult to get a good comfort level that one mask or another will be a good fit.

I got a Medium Ultra Mirage FF mask demo from my DME and it seems to lessen the leaks and the noises. I still have higher AHI than my Swift but I will try another night with this demo and then I will ask to change to this size. Maybe when I get my 420E, I can work on lowering my AHI with this FF mask. The snoring is down according to the numbers that my 420S is giving me for this mask.

Well, I exchanged my large Ultra Mirage FF Mask with a new medium and gave back my medium loaner. I had the best numbers ever last night with 3.4 AHI and 2.3 snoring index. Must be the seal last night created less leaks last night. I hope that I get the same result tonight.
