CPAP machines/Masks

Post by Dixie62 » Sun Aug 02, 2009 10:23 pm

Do all masks work with all CPAP machines. If not how do you know what mask will work with what machine... Sorry for the questions I am such a newbie.. I take my machine/mask back to doctor on Tuesday and then after they download the info I will decide what I will do about getting one..
Thank you for any comments..

All masks will work with all cpap machines. With Resmed machines, you need to program in the mask you are using. With Respironics machines, there is no need to program in the mask in any way.

Good luck.

Hi,

I'm just curious about the above. Does that mean ResMed machines adjust for certain masks, or is it just for generating reports?

Thanks,

It is just for the reporting. ResMed machines subtract the intentional leak rate (normal exhaust flow rate) for the mask chosen before they report the leak. They do not alter therapy, pressure, anything in regards to actual therapy.
It is strictly a numbers thing. Respironics machines don't do this so we have to do the math for ourselves. Not a big deal. ResMed machines just try to help out by doing the math for you. They offer ResMed brand choices though and if you use something else you have to use the plain standard choice which may not have the same flow rate as your mask does at your pressure.

There are other things you can do for a non-ResMed mask with a ResMed machine. If you compare the vent rate of your mask at your pressure (range) with the leak rates of the various ResMed masks, you can probably find one that is pretty close and set your machine for that mask. Then you'll get good numbers.
