what's the pressure formula

Post by DYNE540 » Sat Jul 25, 2009 12:09 pm

Hi,

I see some sleep studies allow for a titration study on a separate or same night.

But my study didn't allow for that. instead, they used a formula to calculate my pressure based on my neck size, weight, & i think ahi.

Does anyone know what the formula is for figuring out pressure?

thanks,
VVE

Never heard of such a formula.

Here's one. P(pred)=(0.193*BMI) + 0.077 + neck circumference + (0.020*AHI) - 0.611

Rogelah, did you make that up, or where did you get it? According to this formula, my pressure should be 20. I was titrated at 7 and am currently running at 10, though I've still got some adjusting to do....

I've seen that formula (or a very similar one) in a paper I found online.

If you want to try it out remember that the neck circumference referenced is in centimeters. (Multiply inches by 2.54)

Here's another one:

Predicted Pressure = (0.16 * BMI) + (0.13 * neck circumference in cm) + (0.04 * AHI) - 5.12

This is the paper: http://www.chestjournal.org/content/117/4/1061.full

I suppose if the medical profession could sell us on a sleep test for $2,000 in a $50 motel room, they could set the pressure from a formula instead of using the test results, maybe some of us would buy that. But it wouldn't be me, I'd reather the Doc, just put slips of paper with numbers in his hat and pull me one. JIM

thank you all for providing that info.

I've scoured the web and they refer to it sometimes as a "Regression Formula."

thanks a million.

That first formula doesn't modify the neck circumference at all, thus the resulting number is very large. Now that I'm using centimeters instead of inches, it's telling me I need a pressure of 44! The second formula gives me a pressure of 5. Interesting article, jdm. Thanks!
