Cotton Mouth on waking

Post by mcejsul » Sun Jul 19, 2009 7:29 am

Hello all,
I will often wake up with cotton mouth (using Liberty fullface with Nasal Pillows-HyBrid). I assume it is from mouth breating. I do have a humidifier that is set to about 4.5 and has maybe a tablespoon of water left in it in the morning.
any thoughts?

I dealt with this issue early on--extremely dry mouth, desert dry! Oasis mouth spray helps a bit, but ultimately, you just have to figure out the best way for you to keep your mouth closed. I found that when my mouth opened, the CPAP air caused the extreme dry mouth. Some say you can train your tongue to stay on the roof of your mouth; others argue that can't be done, but I seem to have been able to do that. Good luck!

If you figure out how to get rid of this let me know! I had the problem at first on a lower pressure (7cm) and decreased my humidifier (I know that sounds strange but it worked). Now that I'm trying out an APAP loaner from my dr's office with much higher pressures (approx. 15cm) I've found the past two nights that my mouth has been extremely dry, this with humidifier set on a 1 or 2, and I can't get rid of some daytime nasal congestion, so I'm thinking the humidifier needs to be off. Maybe try lowering it and see if that helps or try a chinstrap with the Liberty (I was suggested that as well by the members here). Good luck!

Yep, mouth-breathing with a full face mask will still give you dry mouth. And, DECREASING the humidity setting usually helps. It sounds counter-intuitive, but more humidity can actually have the effect of closing off the nasal passages and make mouth-breathing worse.
Turn down or turn off the humidifier, do nasal rinses/cleansing before bedtime so you can breathe through your nose and try training yourself to keep your tongue to the roof of your mouth.

I think that's why the Hybrid has a chin flap. To address that problem for people who who are prone to mouth breathing.

There's an optimum amount of humidity for each of us.

Higher pressure makes the lack of humidity far more pronounced -- which is why I'm not sure further lowering of the humidity is the right solution for you, Heather. It could either way -- you have to keep an open mind about it.
