Finally had my best night yet!

Post by LaurieJ31981 » Thu Jul 16, 2009 5:40 pm

I have been on CPAP for 6 weeks as of today... My pressure was set at 10... which I figured was good since I had 113 apneas an hour at my sleep study and my oxygen dropped to 68%... However I was having a lot of discomfort in my lungs, which then went to my ribs, I was having spasms in my stomach and lower back, It got to the point I didn't want to go to bed...

I talked to my Dr on Tuesday and she told me to lower the pressure to 8... I tried that but it left me feeling like I didn't have enough air... so I put it on 9... and BOOM I slept all night, just a small amount of discomfort in my lungs, nothing that kept me awake trying to find a comfortable position... Woke up at 6:20am, got right up, no pain... and my AHI was 4.8... which is the lowest so far... I did not yawn once today, it was nice ...

Just wanted to share my first good night lol

I am gald to hear that you have finally gotten your night of rest! I have been using CPAP since 6/3/09, and have the exact equipment as you with a pressure of 9. What a pleasure it is to get a full night of sleep

Yes it is! I have been working out the kinks all this time... I won't jump for joy though until I have multiple good nights of sleep, pain and discomfort free.

Great news! Sleeping straight thru for an entire night...shazamm, amazing!

What I did to eliminate that last bit of exhale-lung-chest discomfort was set my ramp time (ramp set at a lower pressure, in my case, until recently my settings were ramp=8, full=11) for as long as it took me to fall asleep. Now, I set it for 5 minutes as that's how long it takes me to fall asleep: lights out, machine on, mask on and a la Pavlov my brain knows it's time to sleep. For some inexplicable reason, if it goes to full pressure when I'm asleep there's less discomfort than if I am awake...weird, likely breathing is slower and more relaxed and being sleep I have less anxiety about breathing.

This bypassed that last bit of exhale against pressure discomfort I had until I lost 52#s and needed less pressure which initiated a while round of finding new settings (hopefully moving to APAP which on loan made breathing so much easier), now have mouth and pillow leaks so fiddling with mask...Hybrid on order and dropping to smaller nasal pillows tonight to see if that eliminates the leak at the top of nostrils. I started with large pillows, then dropped to medium, so maybe I need to drop again...the small pillows felt better when I tried them this morning, will hafta see how they workout tonight...may need to increase diameter of the pillow opening to provide more airflow, will just use as it tonight.

You definitely will! I was already experiencing huge changes... It was just the discomfort that kept me feeling only 75% better. This morning I did have a little discomfort and my AHI was 7.2 but I heard with a ResMed machine, you can cut the HI's in half so I was still below 5.0.

I can't even believe I waited 15+ years for a sleep study, I am amazed at the changes in me, in only 6 weeks.

Mask goes on, I fall right to sleep... I don't toss and turn for hours... It's Great!

I hope other newbies and or not so newbies, have positive results also.
