NEWBIE!

Post by hazelson » Mon Jul 13, 2009 11:23 pm

Hi all - I'm a newbie - if I were to post a pic you could tell by the bags under my eyes and the big welt on the bridge of my nose - but I am smiling.

As well as the usual I have asthma to contend with but I still smile )

I have Fisher & Paykel Sleep Style machine and now use a Respironics Profile Lite Nasal Gel Mask.

I have had the mask for a week - (the nasal pilows wer a bust) the only real problem I have is all the air blowing out the vent. DH tried to help by covering it with a baby sock but I had headaches so figured I was drowning in CO2. No surprise there.

Having the feel of air in my lungs is wonderful - the mask fits well and I can tolerate the noise - it's just the storm across my skin that bugs me - any suggestions.

I have been lurking for a while and thought I should join in - you have a wonderful board here and no b****ing - amazing. Keep it up. And thanks for all the info.

Oh, no! It's a NEWBIE! Run for your lives!

Just kidding.

You have to find a way to divert the vented air without blocking the flow. Someone today posted something he rigged up using air filter material. I'll see if I can find the post.

Hello & Welcome, hazelson! Glad you found this forum—SO much useful info and everyone here is so willing to help!

You're lucky to have found this forum as you begin CPAP--took me almost year before I found this place and, with the help of folks here, got my CPAP therapy working as it should. It does take time to get everything tweaked and working at its best, so patience is key as one begins CPAP. And yes, don't block that exhaust vent!

TY all.

What brought me to the doctor for sleep apnea was two mini strokes. She didn't associate the two until DH read something abut strokes and apnea.

I am feeling better already and it is helping with the asthma as well - I can actually feel my lungs expanding and taking in the good air.

Life is a learning experience and it is a bonus too find good teachers like you all.

Welcome!

Couple of suggestions:

If you can... try and persuade your DME to swap out your machine for a full data machine. If you have problems while on the machine that you've got, you'll either be back in the sleep lab, or guessing what needs to change.

Plus, make sure that your filters are changed often (speaking as another asthmatic)
