Sitting in the dark....

Post by TheDreamer » Fri Jul 03, 2009 11:20 pm

Another storm...another power outage. Been sitting in the dark for probably 1.5 hours now.

The bad thing is that a Duracell PowerPack 600HD was supposed to be delivered today by UPS, but UPS was a no show. The item was showing an out for delivery at 4:45am....though now I see its been adjusted to say 4:45am was the destination scan, and 5:58am was when it went out for delivery. But, it was scheduled for delivery today...and it still hasn't shown up today (which ends in about 5 minutes, or will probably be ended before I hit submit on this message.

Not sure I'd have it charged enough...but I don't even get that option to find out.

I still have a few UPSs around condo that haven't run down....and I did use one last time to run CPAP....so wondering if I'm going to try that again. It was pretty miserable though...since there's no AC and it was getting pretty warm and humid, and that makes it hard to sleep. My floor fan won't run off of UPS.

When I reported the outage to Westar, they were saying 6-12 hours.... I think last time the outage was in the 6 hour ballpark overall, though it was worse, because power came back on for a bit and then went off for an ever longer bit. Wonder if it is possible to get a natural gas generator in a condo (and house it with furnace)....

Darn it.....was just about to type never mind as power came back...but now its gone again....just like last time I guess. Just long enough to put charge into UPSs so they'll beep more another 30 minutes.

Wow....sinus rinse with non-nuked distilled water is something awful.

Guess I'll go to bed and cross fingers that all will be back tomorrow.

If you have a recliner, you could try sleeping in that.

Hope your power returns soon. Sounds like whatever happened did some serious damage. Power outages are more common than average here in Reno. And, they seem to be getting more common again after several years of noticeable improvement.

Now that battery power trials have been (successfully) completed, and the correct fuse size is finally known (Thanks, DeVilbiss!), the battery backup goes on line in a few days.

I was thinking of buying a recliner (as part of plan to renew living room furniture) before I knew that I had sleep apnea....now I'm not sure when I'll get to it. So many other things seem to be more important first....plus other things have a way of just popping up to the top. Like again I'm looking at more backup power solutions, on top of the plan that I had before. The renew bedroom furniture plan was to be after livnging room, but now its moved up in priority. Plus some of the work would go easier if I freed up some space in storage room.

Power came back about half an hour after I posted....wandered around checking a few things and waiting to see if power would last...and then went off to bed. Then at 6am there was a blip in power....the beep of the power going out woke me up...and before I figured out what was going on and checked to see if I was still breathing...there was another beep of power returning. I then slept to 1pm.....should make for an interesting night tonight....

May I suggest a diesel generator?
Or maybe connect a manual generator to an excercise bike? How much power do those xPAP machines use, anyway?

I strongly recommend getting a power outage alarm and plugging it into the same receptable as your xPAP. I live in an electrically active area with power outages. Until I know whether I'm getting a new xPAP, the battery backup is on hold.

In a pinch a power inverter connected to a car battery will give you 110V to run the CPAP.

I am not a Hindu or a god, just Mark from New Jersey. But the CPAP mask makes me look like Ganesha.
