Hello, everyone. This is my first post, although I have been reading the other posts off and on for awhile. I will be posting more questions in the future, but I figured I would start off with an easy one.
I have been putting a few drops of Vicks in my humidifier each night. It eliminates the plastic smell, and provides a more pleasant CPAP experience. My question is, does anybody use anything in their water to provide a pleasant smell? Can anybody think of anything other than Vicks that could be used, just to get a little bit of variety?
Thank you for your time. There is a lot of great information available here, and I think it's great that people are so willing to help.
Question on scents
Re: Question on scents
I was wondering the same thing but I haven't worked up the nerve to experiment yet - too many variables at this stage in my treatment for me to monkey with this. I'll be interested to see what the responses are. I was hoping for something less along the lines of Vicks and more like vanilla.
Re: Question on scents
I wouldn't use anything in the water of your humidifier if I were you.
However, I have used Pur-Sleep aromatherapy for CPAP. You put the scent on a small pad which you place near the intake on your machine, and the smell is drawn through without actually putting the item in the machine.

Re: Question on scents
Kiralynx, I was wondering why you advise against putting anything in the water. I have been doing this for a few months, and haven't seen any adverse effects on my equipment, i.e. buildup in the humidifier.

Ah... the new machine smell. I thought that was something highly coveted.kmcbride21 wrote:Hello, everyone. This is my first post, although I have been reading the other posts off and on for awhile. I will be posting more questions in the future, but I figured I would start off with an easy one.

After the machine blows for a while that smell will eventually dissipate.
My only concern with adding anything other than water in the tank is the residual effect on the tank. There are scent products previously mentioned in another post specifically designed for these machines.

Re: Question on scents
I won't jump into the debate about adding things to your humidifier.
That is almost a religious argument.
(there have been spirited discussions on this topic)
By using something that gets picked up by the air intake the whole machine gets the scent.
By adding scent to the humidifier only part of the machine picks up the scent.
This may not amount to a hill of beans. Just my two (s)cents.

I am not a Hindu or a god, just Mark from New Jersey. But the CPAP mask makes me look like Ganesha.

Re: Question on scents
Apparently....to be confirmed though by someone that has good medical evidence. Vicks is a petroleum jelly product and there is some concern is that small droplets can find their way into your lungs and cause an infection. Not sure how the jelly can get small enough or break down to be small enough to travel to your lungs. I have also been told to not put vicks in your nostrils (disgusting anyways - smells great but ewwwwh)
Pur Sleep provides an essential oils put on a absorbant pad and put next to the air intake and cannot transport oil or other product into your airways. Lovely scents such as French Vanilla other natural aromas like lavender and they also have some more interesting smells like Bubble Gum, Black Cherry. Check them out at CPAP.COM or at their web page PURSLEEP.COM.
