Does anyone else....

Post by LaurieJ31981 » Thu Jun 18, 2009 5:37 pm

get an uncomfortableness in your lungs in the morning? Now that I am finally using the machine for 7-8 hours a night after almost 3 weeks... I wake up and my lungs are sore. It takes a little while before that uncomfortable feeling goes away...

Does anyone else experience this?

I did when I first started, but it stopped after a few weeks of all night cpap use. I think if you just give it a little time you will find that it's just part of the adjustment.

Yes it will go away. Your lungs are not used to the new pressure and the expansion of your chest muscles. Give it some time.

Are you using exhalation relief( EPR)? If not, it might help as you get used to the pressure. I don't have your machine but if you need help with that, I'm sure someone can jump in.

I have EPR off, the pressure is fine doesn't bother me at all. I am actually at the point where I don't want to sleep without that lovely flow of air haha...

This morning, the lungs were ok... So maybe they are adjusting to getting air at night lol...

I am getting more and more used to the machine, and i guess the lung pain is worth it.

Tomorrow will be 4 weeks in, and my lungs still hurt! This morning I slept from 10:30pm until 3am on my right side, woke up finally and was in pain, tried to turn over and it was worse... fell back to sleep until 5:45am, and I normally get up at 6:20am for work, but I just laid there flat on my back, almost in tears... 45 mins later the pain was less uncomfortable...

It's so hard to get up and function when your lungs are in that much discomfort... I guess they are in shock with all the oxygen they are getting now lol...

I just had to vent...

Laurie...call your doc & discuss it with him or his PA, it shouldn't be that painful for that long. I had confused breathing in the mornings back in the beginning, sore all around lower ribcage, and other aches and pains but they got progressively better and less uncomfortable. I did talk to my doc in the second wk about my sore lower ribcage.

If it hurts that much, I wonder if you aren't really dealing with gastric insufflation or as some call it aerophagia. Do some research on it. It is apparently quite painful.

I started reading about it, but all I see is bloating of the stomach and burping a lot... nothing really about the lungs, but I guess that can effect it... I have my EPR off, and it said to put it on and see if that helps any... but the pressure at 10.0 seems ok to me... it also said if you use a nasal mask and mouth breathe it can cause you to swallow extra air... My FF mask is on it's way... so I can't wait to try that out...

I am gonna tape my mouth tonight, that seems to take some of the pressure off my lungs... and I am going to turn the EPR back on for now... but with it off my AHI hasn't been quite as high as it was with it on...

we'll see in the morning...

The pain in your lungs could very well be from swallowing air as someone else suggested. Try sleeping with an extra pillow under your chest to raise you up and see if that helps. Also try turning your EPR up to 3. If this doesn't help call the doctor and they will likely decrease your pressure a notch or two for a month or so that way your airway and espophagus muscles build up strenght. A pressure of 9+ is where I see this symptom quite often in new patients. Laura RRT

I put the EPR on 1 last night, and I taped my mouth , I did have a little discomfort but nothing like the night before. I keep sleeping from 10:30pm to 3amish on my right side... straight through without really waking up. I am sure I am feeling sore from that too, I don't have the best bed... so that is def going to be a purchase soon lol.

I will try the EPR on 2 tonight... My AHI was 6.7 last night... I have only had 2 nights in 4 weeks with it getting below 5.0... However I do feel atleast 85% better then I ever have...

I am just trying to work out the kinks for now... and then when I see my Dr on July 29th I will find out the next step in my treatment whether it's another sleep study, or a pressure decrease... If my AHI has not been below 5.0 much in 4 weeks, wouldn't a pressure decrease make that number go even higher?

I put the EPR on 2 last night, and I woke up at 5am wide awake with just a little bit of discomfort in my lungs... But my AHI went up to 9.7 and I had 0.00 l/s... it's frustrating.
