Regenesis pillow vs SleePAP CPAP Pillow?

Post by Leonbergergirl » Mon Jun 15, 2009 11:58 am

How do they compare? I have the latter, but the cutout is quite too large
to accommodate any of my 8 masks (otherwise it is fine).

As my AHIs are intractably 5.0 up to 11.0, a different pillow is kinda my last
hope of reducing AHIs. At this point, i can't really care about $$.

TIA for any opinions and experiences!

I have my own opinions about this but would be most interested to hear about other people's experiences. Since the Regensis pillow is very new I'd be happy to send out a pillow and case to a few people who have experience with other cpap pillows on the market and are willing to take a *test drive* and provide honest feedback, suggestions, etc. Participants will need to source their own hulls (see the other thread for leads). This is a relatively expensive exercise so I must reserve the right to decline requests. Please include as much detail as possible regarding your experience with pillows (especially cpap pillows). Email me at bret@pursleep.com.

In response to the specific question, based on my experience with the other pillows mentioned, they are made from resilient materials (stuffing that pushes back when compressed). This results in the head compressing lower than the immediate surrounding pillow surface. This feature is more pronounced on the SleePAP pillow than with the PAPillow. But what that means is that for side sleepers, the pillow ridge immediately around your head will contact the mask. As MoneyGal points out, with the buckwheat hulls, it is simple to create a "void" space for the mask wherever you want it. Just move the hulls out of the way. Of course this works best when the pillow is not over-stuffed and there is space inside the pillow to push the hulls.... But that's just my opinion. Better yet, let's get a few more people to make some comparisons....

You Go To Bed At 3 AM?!

Ms. Skeptical has serious doubts about whether any of these specialty pillows will be of benefit, or if any perceived benefit is simply a result of "placebo effect" (although one could easily argue that if it works, who cares why?)

The literature notes that there are about 12 position changes during sleep per night:

What's Normal?

Note, that would be in a "normal" person, and it's unlikely that there are a lot of normal people around here.

See, I can throw out out a straight line.

Anyway, it seems that most of these specialty pillows have quite a narrow window of positional effectiveness, and if people are looking for a pillow to solve sleeping problems, then chances are they may very well be looking at dozens of position changes per night, and the %Positional Effectiveness is miniscule.

I cannot see how a pillow would have any effect on AHI whatsoever.

You got a ResMed something or other, there, eh? Drat! I think you'd be a great Variable Breathing subject.

You wouldn't happen to have a sleep study lying around, would you?

A Pillow Ain't The Issue...

I think the second thing you need to do is print up and start filling out this sleep log:

http://www.sleepeducation.com/pdf/sleepdiary.pdf

The directions are fairly straight forward, and it would be helpful to get 2 weeks of data. Identify the medications.
