need help from Hybrid users!!

Post by psychomamma » Sat Jun 13, 2009 9:18 am

I started with a Swift LT for her -- LOVED how comfortable it was, almost felt like it wasn't even there. But, terrible issues with aerophagia....

Ordered a Hybrid Universal from Apria and got it yesterday. I felt very comfortable breathing through it, could get in all my sleeping positions, etc. BUT, I was a little worried about seal since aerophagia is my issue. I know I probably had it a BIT tight...STILL, I took the mask off at 3 am -- it is 8:15 now and I still have tons of marks on my face above my upper lip!! They are not temporary marks! It almost looks like a rash or a bruise or something!! Has anyone else had a reaction to this mask?? Did I just have it too tight, or maybe I'm having some kind of reaction to the plastic or something???

I slept with it for 5 hours with NO aerophagia, so even though it's not quite as comfortable, I'd like to get used to it --- still, I can't live with these face marks!!!! I swear, if it's not one thing, it's another!!

I had a rash response to another company's mask - the first mask I ever used. I found a recommendation from company reps to soak all new masks in soapy water for 30 to 60 minutes, and have been doing this religiously with every new mask (or mask seal) I got since. No rash. Check the instructions so see if there are any time limitations on soaking, and if there aren't, soak as recommended.

Soak. Wiping is not enough.

If you have been using masks with silicone seals, which I think all masks use, there is not a lot of likelihood you are reacting to the silicone itself, but to the mold release agent (usually also a silicone) or the polymerizing agent. So Ozij's response is appropriate-- a soaking, or at least a really thorough cleaning with a good dish soap, etc.

The strap system on this mask's headgear is the key to making it work right. There is a balance between the upper straps and the overhead strap that will ensure a good seal on the nasal pillows without putting too much pressure on the upper lip seal. The fitting video included will help point you in the right direction to a proper fit.

I have to wear my hybrid fairly tight because I find I have to run a fairly high pressure. The mask never leaves any marks, but the straps do a little bit.
