Hi, jojo. I don't like using a FFM, either, and you're definitely not alone with the mouth-leak problem. There are various solutions that people have come up with, so search the site for lots of info on the subject. Some of your options for keeping your mouth shut are:

Chinstrap (or papCAP w/chinstrap built in)
Mouth-taping (3M #2080 blue easy-release painters tape is popular here)
Chin-Up strips
Poligrip strips (wetted and applied to your lips to seal them)

You might consider a Hybrid or Liberty mask, which is a mouth mask with attached nasal pillows. It allows both nose and mouth-breathing, but there's nothing covering your nose, so it feels less claustrophobic than a typical FFM.

Personally, I'm not a fan of mouth-taping, but others say it works well for them. I've tried it. Had to cough once, and I looked and felt like Dizzy Gillespie (or a chipmunk on steroids); that wasn't fun. I haven't tried the Poligrip strips, since the result would be the same.

I use a chinstrap, and I think it works pretty well for me; for others, it's not enough. You just have to experiment with options and find out what works best (and is comfortable) for you. There are lots of great ideas and advice floating around here. Good luck!
Veni, vidi, Velcro. I came, I saw, I stuck around.

Dx 11/07: AHI 107, central apnea, Cheyne Stokes respiration, moderate-severe O2 desats. (Simple OSA would be too easy. ;))

I vote for taping. Neither chinstrap nor hybrid mask worked for me.

I can easily cough or clear my throat while taped. The one time I woke up with an impending sneeze, I had to resort to the ripcord, tho. (Fold over about an inch of tape on your dominant side (left-handed, for me...) as a handle to rip the tape off in a breathing emergency.)

Painter's tape wasn't enough to keep my big mouth shut. (Duct tape was way TOO much, but that's a-whole-nother story...)
I currently use perforated paper dressing/surgical tape (different brands have different names for it). It's sticky enough to seal, yet won't rip out two days worth of whisker stubble by the roots.

Search and ye shall find tons of info/techniques on taping.

taping seems to be the popular vote here...
I use nasal pillows and luckily do not mouth breathe/snore as a result.
surprises me as I was a terrible snorer before cpap (so im told).
I do know I am not bone dry several times during the night anymore though.
Sometmes I do open the trap during the night, and also to try and help my leak rates
I tried the tape job... (blue painters tape). not sure if it was subconscious or what,
but I could not stop yawning when I put it on!!! Others here have learned to yawn thru
a closed mouth. I could not do it. I pulled it off out of frustration.
Just cannot get the idea of using pollident to glue my chomper closed...

JoJo....

Here's some tips for the tape......

1. When applying, use a piece about 10" long and fold the ends about 1/2" to form removal handles.
2. Apply the tape at the mouth area first....then soooth the flaps against each cheek. The seal around the mouth works better this way.
3. Use 2" 3M #2080 Delicate Release Painter's Tape available at Lowe's paint dept.
4. When removing, pull parallel to your face....not at 90-degrees to your face. No pain removing it parallel.
5. Consider assisting the gentle adhesive by applying a band made from panty-hose-TIGHTS over the tape and around the back of your head. Attach the 2nd leg-band to the first just ahead of each ear
and run it over the top of your head. This helps keep the tights in position. The added mild pressure to the top of the tape helps prevent blow-outs.
6. Finally, you might consider using Lansenoh Lanolin on your nares to help seal (if you're using nasal pillows). Gob it on....works great...seals wonderfully. The stuff is used for nursing moms...makes your
nares "nipple-soft" (just what every REAL man needs).
