Was this dead dude a CPAP user?

Post by roster » Sun Jun 07, 2009 12:18 pm

The article first says, "sleep apnea monitor" and then later, "apnea machine was working ....". It makes no sense that he would have a sleep apnea monitor in his cell but a CPAP would make sense.

ADELAIDE, AUSTRALIA

An Australian man awaiting trial for allegedly killing his estranged wife was found hanged in his cell in Port Augusta prison, prison officials said.

Neil Heyward's cellmate discovered the body early Saturday in the shower area, the Adelaide Sunday Mail reported. Sources told the newspaper Heyward arranged a pillow and clothes on his bed so he appeared to be asleep and left a sleep apnea monitor turned on.

"For all intents and purposes, without having a close look in the dark, it appeared he was in bed," a source said. "The bed was plump and the apnea machine was working next to it."

Officials said Heyward tried to cut his throat when he was arrested in December 2007 but had given no sign since that he was suicidal.

Heyward, who owned a large dairy farm in Mt. Schank in South Australia, was charged after the body of his wife, Glenys, was found buried in the neighboring state of Victoria. Investigators said Glenys, who had been reported missing by her sister, was involved in a financial dispute with her husband and their two sons.

Matthew Heyward, 21, and a farmhand, Jeremy Minter, 26, are also charged with killing Glenys Heyward. Charges against another son, Thomas, were dropped for lack of evidence.

My guess is that yes he was a CPAP user. I think whoever wrote this article got their terms mixed up....

His XPAP was probably found set by the prison DME at the 4 CM to 20 Cm treatment range, and he was using a nasal mask without taping. Jim

He probably got the same treatment from his DME that most do.

On the positive side...
You have to give the man credit for being commited to his CPAP therapy.
If I were suicidal that would that would be the first thing I would stop.

this is local news for me, this man was awaiting trial for the very calculated and brutal murder of his wife due to marriage breakdown and he did not want to have to sell the family property as part of a property settlement so it is alleged that he roped his son or sons into the idea of killing their mother and hiding her body- the body was eventually found and the scheme uncovered- he tried to run and then had an armed siege, that ended with him supposedly trying to slit his throat- he has been on remand ever since -it seems he had left his bed padded up so it looked like he was asleep and he had his cpap machine turned on and blwing in the breeze while he hung himself from a shower head in the cell- he had a cell mate he did not twigg to what he was doing or simpley did not care enough to alert anyone- i don't very often say good riddence but this is one case where i am saying it a pity he waited til after he had killed his wife- i have little sympathy for the perpetrators of domestic violence - of course now there will be coroners inquests and lots of allegations about how they should have watched him more closely but if he really was intent on killing himself before the trial they would be able to do much to stop him

Rooster, I must be tired. I saw the title and then the picture, and for a moment thought it was picture of the deceased. Anyhow, what's up with that avatar?! Maybe I missed something in another thread about it?

What a tragic story for the families of both the deceased on so many levels.

About cpap, maybe he was used to using cpap and just wanted to continue. Who knows? In prison, medical needs can mean a greater probability of occasional outings to medical facilities - and just maybe even a chance to escape. I can't help but wonder if greed is the whole story. While nothing justifies his actions, I wonder if this farm had been in his family for generations, or if there were other factors in play that contributed to his mental instability. Or if he'd always been just plain mean. I think I think too much.

Kathy

I know this is going to sound cold and unkind but I think at least that's one less murder we have to worry about our tax dollars paying for. This is just another story about how "wonderful" our jails are. Just like the 2 inmates that just walked out of the arkansas prision during a guard exchange.

It would not surprise me. But just google "bailout money going to China" and you will see there isn't much left for the Aussies.

My wife ambushed me in the bathtub Saturday night. It took quite an effort to throw her off my chest!

Sunday night it was a raw potato stuffed in my CPAP hose.

My term life insurance policy expires in two years. If I can make it until then, maybe she will lose interest.
