For positional sleep apnea, a helmet?

Post by Pad A Cheek » Sun Jun 07, 2009 7:06 am

Hello,
I was researching this morning and ran across this product for positional sleep apnea.

http://www.sleepmedicinesolutions.com/

Just wanted to know what you all think about it, there is a You Tube about it also.
People are definately thinking about how to help.
I like my mask personally, and I sleep on my stomach. I would not want to add that much more to my head.
What do you think?

Karen

Hmm. I like watching football. Don't want to look like I'm playing it in bed.

On a positive note, I'm glad the inventors out there are working on alternatives to make our xPAP lives easier. Personally, I can't sleep on my stomach for anatomical reasons, so this product is not an option for me. But it could help others, so thanks for bringing it to the attention of the forum.
Veni, vidi, Velcro. I came, I saw, I stuck around.

Dx 11/07: AHI 107, central apnea, Cheyne Stokes respiration, moderate-severe O2 desats. (Simple OSA would be too easy. ;))

PR S1 ASV 950, DreamWear mask, F&P 150 humidifier, O2 @ 2L.

I'm glad people are thinking about ways to help.

I can't imagine putting that thing on to sleep.

I've gotten over the claustrophobia enough to tolerate a full-face mask when I have a respiratory infection. But there's no way in Hades I would consider putting that thing on, even just sitting up.

Looks to me like a halo screwed into my head may be more stable and comfortable as I am a tummy sleeper too!

The idea I read on here last year (by Rosemary?) of wearing a backpack to bed would be better than a helmet. I keep seeing those little tote type backpacks with the drawstring serving as straps that seem would be barely noticeable, just enough to make back sleeping uncomfortable. My only concern with these is I roll from side to side a lot, and it may wake me up more to have to semi sit to flip from side to side umpteen times.

I once was thinking about making a pillow that is a large version of the one used for infants to keep them in a side sleeping position. I've seen some adult size ones for sale but they looked worthless for preventing back sleeping. Another factor is those with a large girth would need as much space to side sleep as back sleep, so just having a dip between two pillows wouldn't help. But I think most of us could come up with something more practical than a helmet.

Karen (Padacheek), I'll be PMing you my prototype.

Kathy

There is absolutely no way I would wear a helmet like that to bed. I cant even imagine putting it on.... My hubby loved playing football in high School though and for that reason alone he would probably love it
I dont suffer from insanity.... I enjoy every minute of it!

Thanks Karen,

I am interested to see and hear more about it. How does it keep you off your back?

I was an inveterate backsleeper and trained myself to sleep on my sides by wearing a backpack for 15 months. More recently I have trained myself to tummy sleep.

Biggest concern about the device, is it too warm?

Glad someone is working on new things for us!

We will still need PadACheeks!
