Question about Snoring and Cpap

Post by davey » Fri May 22, 2009 3:07 pm

Hello. New user to this board but Have had my CPAP for over a year. Using a Resmed S8 I think the auto one and a Quattro Mask.

It seems to work ok and I am way less tired, but I got it in the first place due to very very load snoring. I live alone and have no access to anyone who can stay the night and see if I am indeed snoring.

I am moving into a new place and will have a roommate soon and want to make sure my snoring is not as bad as it is. I found the menu on the CPAP showing Usage and stuff but not sure what any of these numbers mean. I will post numbers for last month.

AI .2
HI 3.5
AHI 3.8
Pressure 10
Leak .70 Liter

Can anyone tell using this data if I am still snoring?

Thansk a lot.

I can't interpret the numbers but was going to use the record function on my "iPod" tonight to see how things sound. It can record longer than I sleep and when the memory card is plugged into my computer, I think I can fast forward through it and look for spikes, play them and then determine if it is me snoring or something else. My wife (in the next bedroom ) said that I don't snore anymore. I've used this recorder before doing my sleep study to hear myself. Scary!

Hi Davey,

The important statistic is your AI. This is an indication of how many apnoeas you have during the nigh. Having an AI of 0.2 means that you are having 0.2 apneas per hour you are on therapy.

If you sleep for 8 hours then an AI of 3.8 means that you are having around 0.2 * 8 = < 2 apneas per night - which is quite good.

As to whether you can use this data to tell whether you are snoring or not, that isn't so clear. Are you using Autoset mode? In AutoSet mode the S8 will detect your snoring and increase the pressure acccordingly until you stop.

Hope this helps.

The leak rate is probably way too high to even consider using the AHI information.

My numbers are similar and I don't snore anymore. My daughter says it is spooky not to hear it. When she was little she actually liked it, said she felt safe sleeping with "mama bear"! (my ex not so much)

Yes, that leak is much too high. Either mask leak, or mouth leak. Both work against your therapy.
And are noisy....

Good advice to follow up with the leak rate. I just wanted to add that before I was diagnosed with sleep apnea, I bought a device to measure snoring (note, this device is not for sleep apnea). It's called SnorePro 600. You wear it on your wrist and it measures the number of times in a night it detects you snoring. It measures an increase of decibels for a certain amount of time and gives you a score in the morning. When you first turn it on, it adjusts to background noise, so switch the CPAP on first. I live alone and used this device to get feedback on my snoring before I was diagnosed with sleep apnea. The SnorePro 600 can also be used as a biofeedback device but I didn't use that feature and am not recommending using it for biofeedback, just to measure snoring.

Oh I see. I always thought under 1liter a hour was good.

What should a Good leak rate be?

The leak rates given in the ResMed machines are liters per second. And, assuming your mask selection in your machine is "correct", the leak rate should be around 0.00 as the machine does calculations by mask and pressure settings. If it gets over .30, you've got a leak problem. Leak numbers at about .20 or less are "acceptable".

You should be tracking your numbers nightly if you want to get control of your therapy......not using "averages".

In the long run, averaging is what it's all about, but looking at nightly numbers will be able to give more specifics when starting therapy.

It's just an educated guess, but I doubt that you're snoring...not enough to worry about anyway.

During some of my darker days over the past three years of cpap, the absence of snoring was about the only thing that kept me compliant some days. Whenever I'm in a hotel or visiting with relatives it's a great relief to know that I'm not rattling the windows. My lovely bride put up with my snoring for most of our 40 years together and it took a while for her to get used to the relative quiet after I started on cpap.
