All of A Sudden AHI Climbs Up

Post by jrfoster » Sun May 17, 2009 8:43 am

For the last 4 weeks my AHI has gone from an average of 2.4 up to 3.2 and 3.4. No changes in masks or pressure settings. I do not have a cold and as far as I know everything is the same. Anyone found this true with them? If so, how did you get you AHI back down?

Jeff

The main question is "How do you feel?" Since your AHI is still below 5, it is below the maximum recommendation for AHI in CPAP therapy.

I am feeling fine. I am one of those who have been on CPAP for three years and have worked to bring my AHI down as far as possible. Some on this forum can keep theirs down below 2 each week. I did get a week of 1.6 AHI in early April of this year! WOW! I don't know how that happened but would like to see it down at 2 on a regular basis.

Jeff,
Any change in your stress level (i.e. increase)? I went through a few days of pretty extreme stress at work last week, my AHI's seemed to increase, but I'm not certain of this yet as I need to monitor trends more closely.

Can anyone comment on stress levels and potential impact on AHI?

I am sure stress does play a role as we go to sleep. I have not been under an abnormal amount of stress other than the day to day problems at work. At bedtime I am usually calmed down and ready for bed. This is probably just one of those things that happen to us periodically and will soon get back to normal! That is my hope!

For me, allergies made a difference.
Plus I think I was fighting off a flu bug - body aches and low-grade fever.
And my final concert for the season was last evening.

My slight AHI rise (1.2 to 1.6 average) could have been any of those.

Do your pillows on the mask need changing?

I am not finding any more leakage than normal for my mask. I guess I have been using the current cushion about 3 months. I do have 4 more new ones in reserve. I suppose I could change out the cushion and see if it makes a difference. Who knows? Thanks for the suggestion!

That usually fixes most of my troubles.

Any weight gain? Have you checked the inlet filter of your machine?

No real weight gain, leak rates are normal, and I don't have a cold or any allergies. I will try a new cushion tonight and see what the week holds!
