I'm posting this on behalf on people who have purchased the USB SmartCard reader directly - it doesn't affect me directly, but I have had two inquiries from people with problems.
The question is: can you use the Mako supplied USB drivers for the SmartCard with Encore Pro, or do you have to use the drivers on the Respironics CD? One person reported to me last night that after installing the Mako drivers, the USB port option was grayed-out in the Encore Pro Preferences and the card reader was inoperative.
Has anybody been able to get Encore Pro running without the Respironics CD?

Derek from what I read on the subject, those that got the smartcard reader elsewhere loaded the drivers from the encore pro CD to make sure they had the current versions, it seemed to work. I hope so, cause I bought a smartcard reader from 2factors for 30 bucks shipped. By the way excellent job on myencore software, can't wait to bring it all together and start reading my progress, Cary

It was me!
I'm the one who asked Derek the most recent question concerning this issue, and I appreciate his post on my behalf.
Looking over past posts relating to this issue, I agree that the Encore Pro driver is the likely solution. But my software-only purchase from CPAP.com did not include a driver disk as part of the shipment. Since Derek's posts have mentioned a second disk containing the driver, I assumed Respironics only includes this second disk when a card reader is ordered. I cannot find anything that looks like a driver on the Encore Pro software disk, so my assumption seems to be correct.
If I am wrong, I would appreciate it if someone could tell me what file name(s) on the Encore Pro software disk contain the card reader driver. My Encore Pro disk is marked as V1.4i Rev.4. If the driver is there, the operating system cannot recognize it when I attempt to update the driver via the Device Manager.
If I am right, I need to acquire the Respironics driver before my setup will work. I've been to the Respironics software support site at:

For some reason, the driver is not offered for download (unless it is included in Service Pack 1, which I have yet to install). I intend to contact them and request it. Excellent! Thanks to all for the quick assist. I will download the driver from Sleepyman's website and see what happens. But I do have two follow-up questions:
Sleepless on LI: I double-checked my Encore Pro disk as you suggested, and the Utilities directory contains nothing I recognize as a Windows driver. If you have a file name or subdirectory name I should look for, please let me know. Otherwise, it seems that Respironics may have changed their distribution strategy for the card reader support since you and I made our respective purchases of Encore Pro.
Sleepyman: What is the URL you used to find the Respironics driver support page? I looked on their site but could not locate that particular download. Please advise.

Go to my computer with your disk in. Right click on whatever drive it's in and click on "Explore." You will see a file called "Smart Card Drivers."
Forgive me for the mistake. Let me know if you were able to work it all out.

It worked! I'm up and running.
And once I saw the name (SETUP) and size of Sleepyman's download file, I knew exactly which directory on the Encore Pro disk you meant for me to search. Because I had found this same file previously on my disk and executed it to (almost) no effect. It did not fix the card reader recognition problem in Encore Pro, so I assumed it could not be the driver I needed.
After another false start and the all-to-common removal and reinstallation of everything, it turns out that I did indeed need this file. Why? Because it enables the USB support OPTION in the PREFERENCES menu. But it does NOT install the DRIVER for the USB reader card as part of that process. For that I had to go back to the Mako installation disk that came from Taiwan with the Infineer reader. But THIS time, when I installed the Mako driver AFTER running that undocumented SETUP file,.... it worked! Encore Pro now recognizes the presence of the USB card reader and downloads the data from my card.
So, in summary, the sequence for my system seems to be:
1. Install the Encore Pro software (before connecting the USB card reader, as Derek's review article instructs)
[Because no card reader is attached, the Encore install routine applies the default settings for a serial card reader on COM1 and DISABLES the USB and PCMCIA selection options in the PREFERENCE menu. From some of the CPAPtalk posts I've read, this behavior has confused more than one user.]
2. Run Sleepyman's SETUP file (undocumented, it is the only file located in the "Smart Card Readers" directory on my Encore Pro install disk)
[Running this routine enables the USB and PCMCIA selections in the PREFERENCES menu. But as I said, in my case, it did NOT install the USB driver for the card reader.]
3. Plug in the Infineer USB card reader. Windows XP detects it and prompts for the Mako driver disk that came with the reader. Once that installation is complete and the system restarts, the setup is complete and working.
For those who buy the software and hardware separately, these may be the three steps that are necessary for a successful Encore Pro/USB installation.
Now, if the thing stops working after I install Service Pack 1, I'll kill myself.

Derek good post, lots of info I will need to get up and running. Sometimes I wonder about myself, I saved a lousy 20 bucks buying the smartcard reader from 2factors. I assume your site has all the info on how to integrate the myencore software with encore pro?
