saw my doc today

Post by elader » Fri May 15, 2009 5:50 pm

Visited my GP with my Encore Pro data and oximetry data (just for fun) . I needed an ENT consult from his about my chronic stuffy nose. In the last 4 months my blood pressure went down 10 points and I lost 13 pounds. Yay CPAP. Well, Ok, yay exercising like a crazy man too. But the exercise couldn't have been done without cpap.

He says because of me he asks EVERY patient getting an annual checkup about whether they have the warning signs for apnea. He's on the prowl for more people to save.

That is really good news to hear, elader! Spread the word. My PCP has been the same way with unusual (I think) attentiveness to OSA. Yay.

Elader, good job. I've been watching your progress from the start. I'd be interested to know what your exercise routine is and if I could modify it somewhat for my husband who's quite a bit older than you. He's not very overweight but could stand to lose a few lbs and needs to build some muscle.

I've found at least 4 people who have OSA. None of them have done a sleep study. <sigh> Denial ain't just a river in Egypt.

I was talking to a woman at work and her husband is so bad, he has a pee bottle by the side of the bed so he doesn't have to get up during the night to pee.

....and his blood pressure is so high at night.......that he'll probably have a stroke.......at about the time he's trying to get it into that bottle. Ask your co-worker if her husband is brave enough to check his blood pressure in the middle of the night. If not, tell him to imagine what the EMT will be thinking as they see him and the bottle.....

I spent three months on the elliptical, 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week. I am now riding a road bike, 20 miles of rolling hills 5 times a week -

the elliptical is superb cardio - major fat burner, and very low stress.

20 miles!!! - I don't think I've ever ridden 20 miles in single day in my life.
Fantastic.
Just curious - how long does it take you to ride twenty miles in a day?

It needs to be something he enjoys in a setting he likes.

I can lift weights in my unfinished, unheated, unairconditioned, walk-in attic all by myself. Many people would not enjoy it. They have to have a temperature controlled, well lit, fancy gymn with companionship.

Hubbie needs to find something he enjoys in a setting he likes. It other words, it needs to be something he looks forward to doing several times per week.

Anyone can ride 10 miles in an hour on a bike if the terrain is flat. I used to ride 35 miles in Texas when I was younger.

It all depends on terrain. My area is all rolling hills. When I started, I was riding a 12 mile loop in about an hour with a couple of stops along the way to catch my breath. I now ride 20 in about 90 minutes. The trick for rolling hills I learned is to pedal DOWN so you have less work to do going up. Carbonman cycles in Colorado. He would get a good laugh about my hills.

Wonderful! The AMA needs to wise up. Every GP should be doing this.

Dori - I have the booklet from this site "Growing Stronger - Strength Training for Older Adults". I highly recommend it for older adults, even those who haven't been into strength training for a long time.

It is excellent! I have been using the program for about 3 years now. It starts very slowly and gradually increases. You can keep careful track of progess. It works! Even with my Rhuematoid Arthritis, I have been able to keep with this program.

You can download it and print it out or order a bound copy of it from the site that Ozij suggested.
