Humidifier/sleep apnea issues...

Post by Krunal » Sun May 10, 2009 5:58 pm

I have been using CPAP for almost 2 years but still the battle continues and am just not able to comoply with the machines. There have been numerous sleep studies, oneof which i had to abruptly stop because it wasnever ending pain and no sleep. I am tired of doctors advise and hope get some respite over here.

1. I am having problem with M-series humidifer with CPAP machine. My 90% pressure is 17.5 which is way high. The water gets empty with setting at level 5 after 5 hrs. I am keeping 2 humidifiers for now and change at night but its definitely not helping because of insomnia(i just am not able to sleep). Any suggestion would be appreciated. I think my nose congestion is also contributing to this. I already had one unsuccessful operation for nasal septum, plan to do another one. I also use fluticasone and saline regularly, sometimes it helps and sometimes it doesnt.

2. I am planning to switch to bi-pap(vpap auto 25, so as to reduce the pressure hopefully) and use the popular HC150, was wondering if this will solve the water getting over issue and hope the humidity is good since it has only 4 levels of setting? Also... any feedback on the Devilbiss 9200DI-H Heated Humidifier(which has 10 level of settings and 525 ml of water) for my specific needs? Will it be compatible with the bipap machine Thanks.

3. I am going through Apriya but they dont carry Devilbiss, anybody having recommendation for another carrier?

4. Also any good doctor, i need a sleep therapist who helps me to learn how to sleep with this machine. I am planning to go to Stanford sleep clinic, do you guys think it willmake a difference.

I think i have asked too many questions, i am sure no one person will be able to help, but please help as much as you could thanks

You haven't asked too many questions and I'm pretty sure there will be several folks who can help you. I'm not familiar with your machine or insurance so I can't offer much help at this time but I do want to assure you that there are folks who can help you with your questions. Until you hear from them, you can visit the links that are at the Our Wisdom button at the top right of your screen. You can also go into the User Control Panel and enter your machine and equipment into the Profile/Edit Equipment area and that will help others to know what you use whenever they read one of your posts.

I think you will find a lot of help and support at this forum

You don't mention what mask.

If the humidifier is "stand alone" it can be put into the circuit. I can probably be added onto an existing circuit (I have heard of ppl using 2 humidifiers at once, one after the other in a line). The m series humidifier is rather small I understand.

If you wish to use your insurance, you will have to check with them on what DME's are "in network" and what the coverage would be.

As far as learning to sleep with the machine, keep asking here, and also maintain the attitude that you "can do it". The attitude makes a big difference.

.
I understand that Stanford Sleep Clinic (in CA) is the first sleep clinic in the country, founded by Dr. William Dement back around 1970 who also founded "Sleep Medicine" in that era . . . not really so long ago.

Surely you can't go wrong there!

I seem to get along fine on a setting of 1 or 2 on the humidifier, but everyone is different. If you need 5, I think you might want to consider using a room or whole-house humidifier to bring up the humidity of the air before it enters the machine. Small room-sized humidifiers are available at big box stores for $30 to $60. That might allow you to set the control on the CPAP machine back to maybe 3, which make the water last a little longer. It really doesn't matter too much where you place the humidifier. When you add water to the air, that water spreads throughout your house even if the humidifier is in a corner of a room or even in a different room.

Mask that i am using is the nasal pillow mask, I settled on this mask after trying tons of mask fro almost 6 months, i will like to stick to it and reduce the variables. Doctor says leaks are not that bad.

I am using the M Series Auto CPAP with A-Flex machine:
https://www.cpap.com/cpap-machine/remst ... -flex.html
I plan to switch to vpap auto25 as per doctors advise(i am not sure how machine looks, but it may be something like below):

The current humidifier looks like:
https://www.cpap.com/productpage/respir ... ifier.html
Jules how do i connect two humidifiers? I have 2 M-series humidifiers lying at home, i can try that. Its dificult to keep "can do" attitude after 2 years. Just curious how long did you all face to get consistent good night sleep.

New humidifier is a toss up between:
HC-150: https://www.cpap.com/productpage/fisher ... ifier.html
or Devilbiss: https://www.cpap.com/productpage/devilb ... -hose.html

I am inclining towards devilbiss since it has 10 range heating levels and 525 ml of water and wider surface area which i assume will provide better humidification. i plan to get the home humidifier as well just in case.

thanks for tip on wisdom section, i plan to just lick that section up. P.S: I updated the current equipment used by me from user control panel

I have the Respironics M auto cflex series with a Swift II (11-12 cm) as well. I'm in AZ where 2-3% humidity is not uncommon. Never got the integrated humidifier to do the job. I don't use it at all.

I bought the F&P 150, and built a little shelf for it next to the night stand. It comes with an 18" hose to go from the xPAP machine to the humidifier. Just plug your mask hose onto the other side of the chamber. (Those "quick coupler" https://www.cpap.com/productpage/hose-q ... nnect.html ends really help) I never have needed more than about a 2.5 setting. ( I don't use the integrated humidifier at all). I can usually get 8 hour nights out of a single fill. If not, I keep an old prescription bottle of distilled water on the bed side. If I do run out, I just dump it in the F&P 150. If you piggybacked this with the integrated humidifier, I'll bet you'd be just fine.

Hi,

Did you end up going to Stanford? I am thinking of going there. Is there anything you can tell me about your experience? Doctor(s) you recommend or not? etc.

Thanks!
