Getting through a bad day

Post by tattooyu » Mon Apr 13, 2009 11:07 am

Every one of us will have our bad nights now and again, whether it be due to mouth breathing, mask leaks or something else. I had two in a row, and I can certainly feel it today.

Do any of you have any suggestions on how to get through work day and the symptoms (edginess, bloating, lightheadedness, etc.) any easier?

These things can help me:

A short nap
Light exercise
Fruit juices
Mint tea
Avoid heavy meals

Hope things get better for you!

Thanks, alnhwrd. I will have some tea a little later, and I can't forget to do my deep breathing exercises today during my lunch break.

Unfortunately, a nap would have to wait until I got home from work, unless I can sneak one in--nah, I don't have my CPAP with me.

I think that if the young women among us have found ways to get through days, sometimes several, of edginess, bloating, and headaches, and to do so with the grace, patience, and focus as they so often do, it behooves us males to do our best to do the same, and allow it to give us some fellow feeling.

Sometimes it helps me to think about what I may try the next night for attempted improvement. That way I can focus beyond the day I have to get through. And with PAP therapy, understanding that the setbacks are part of the process of getting our therapy where it needs to be may be something to meditate on. Forcing myself to smile at someone and laugh at something that may not even be all that funny helps me to actually feel more like how I force myself to act. And if I can say a few nice words to someone and find a way to be helpful in some little way, it takes my mind off how I'm feeling for that moment and makes me feel like I'm accomplishing something, despite how I feel.

You'll get through it today. You always do. And you'll be a better person for it.

Thanks for your posts here, Man.

Thanks, Jeff. That was very enlightening and humbling. It just goes to show that women have a much higher physical tolerance than men. We're wusses, even if we adamantly deny it.

I'll just try and zen it out.

Kenny,
I'm sorry you are having a "punk" day. I think most of us have days like that - sometimes based on our physical problems or mental/emotional stuff. It is harder to combat these days when you are at work. I find I have to put considerable effort to break the streak. You obviously can't do physical exercise while you are at work. Even with a few physical pains, if I do some light exercise it helps me.
If I can't do that, I try to change my frame of mind. If I am feeling in a blue funk - and take a few minutes and make a list of the things that are going right in my life, that has the potential to lift my spirits/body - I find when I force my self to make the list, it just keeps getting longer and longer, and for me, suddendly my body aches seem insignificant compared to all the positive things I can include in my list.
I find I do better with this if I don't focus on material things - I include relationships, I think of a phone call to a friend, where we laughed and talked for a few minutes - a book or an article I read that gives me a good feeling - today I would think for a minute about the Navy Seals, Captain Phillips and his family and how all of them are on a high today because of Captain Phillips' successful rescue. Thoughts like this distract me from my personal blaws, and I feel grateful just to be alive.
I wish the best for you today Kenny.
Jan

I wish...

Can't drink while on lunch, and, more importantly, I don't metabolize alcohol well. I get VERY sick even from a little bit. Bummer, huh?

Thanks, Jan. All great suggestions. I'll try those and see how it goes! Only eleven more hours until I can go to sleep for the night!

I had that night on Saturday. Up frequently, night sweat and chills. Looked at my data the next morning. Not pretty AHI twice the normal, up at 10. Thought it was time to try my new mask as the old one is 5 months old. I spent Sunday feeling crappy, but am somewhat better today.

We all go through it.

Slog it through with one foot in front of the other. It works. The day is NOT eternal, even if it feels so.

And remember what life was like before XPAP - when most every day was rotten.

Breath deeply, enjoy the fresh air and keep going!

For bad days? Well, for me....

More frequent but lighter physical exercise and meals, clear the evening calendar, avoid situations requiring rapid thought, get someone to "gut-check" my work if I must, that day, make any decisions, being more than usually aware of irritability and how I treat other people.

I also find myself taking advantage of good days - working a bit extra, getting through the more complicated tasks, having the more complicated or unpleasant conversations, getting a better workout....

JNK, how lovely - beautifully written, and shows a great deal of understanding and empathy.

What a guy - not only a comedian and a thinker, but also a sensitive!

Tattooyu, all of the above suggestions. Plus, I eat a lot of sugar (read chocolate & candies) trying to get energy, but instead just get fatter, so don't go there!
