I upped my pressure a bit last night, and a question

Post by Froro » Thu Apr 09, 2009 6:20 am

After 4 nights of worsening numbers I decided to up my pressure a little bit to see if that made any difference. I moved it up from 7 to 7.4.

Numbers from last night
AI .1
HI 3.1
AHI 3.2
Leak = 0.00%

WOOT!!! I slept really well and feel really good this morning.

I do have a question for anyone using the resmed elite II with humidifier (H4i). I have noticed a bit of a high pitch coming from the machine itself when I exhale. It becomes less noticable when I inhale but it's definately there during exhalation. I had my husband investigate as he can hear it too and it's definately coming from the machine and not the mask. There is no condensation in the tubing. The humidifier has a low whir (pitchwise) when it's warming as well. The sound itself is not really loud, it's more the pitch of it that kinda sears through my ears into my brain making it a little difficult to fall asleep.

I brought it in to the DME but they couldn't hear anything. (nor could I but they stuffed paper towel into the outlet for the humidifier and we did not do a test with the hose and my actual body attached to it so that may have made the difference).

Has anyone else heard this pitchy sound?

Everyone is sensitive to certain pitch frequencies ... probably not what you want to hear (pun intended).

Background ambient sounds to drown out irritating pitch or ear plugs are general solutions ... probably not what you want to hear either (no pun inteneded).

Congrats on finding your optimal pressure though ... taht probably is good to hear

I also have that little whistle on my machine and it seems that it is at the same pressure. The thing that saves me is my pressure is much higher than yours so it only whistles on the ramp up when it hits about 7. Once my pressure has come up above that the noise stops.

I bet that you are one of those people that can hear if an old tube TV is on by the high pitch sound too. Most people never hear that whistle, but due to us being able to hear high pitch noises, we get the fun of dealing with this.

There are two things that I can suggest. One is that you turn on the ramp and have it run slow in hopes that you fall asleep before the dreaded whistle starts. Another option is to do what some here have done, put the machine in an end table or something to muffle the sound.
Life can move pretty fast, if you don't stop and look around once in a while you could miss it.

My pressure is much higher and I do not use the ramp. I don't have the Elite but I use the Autoset II with the H4i. I have never heard the noise you describe with mine and actually never thought about the humidifier making any noise at all.

You might try going to Resmed's website and emailing them to inquire about it. Good luck!

YUP!! I have wicked hearing (much to the chagrin of my children). My doctor informed me recently that I have the largest ear drums he has ever seen Hopefully this will allow me to avoid the hearing aids that my entire family seems to need.

I'm glad to know I'm not alone at that setting. I think I'll bring it back into the DME on Tuesday and tell them we need to run it with me attached to it.

I've been dealing with it by popping on the wireless headset and listening to the television (with the screen off) to fall asleep but I inevitably end up waking up to take the headset off at some point.

Are you using the EPR feature? I noticed it making a weird noise with EPR on..

I use the ResMed Autoset II, and I seem to remember hearing that when my pressure was lower (before I got my actual titrated pressure). I don't recall hearing it any more either.
You may not be hearing one particular sound. It could be harmonics bouncing off of surfaces in that particular space, i.e., your bedroom.

By the way, I can hear those "dog whistle pitches", too, especially from the TV when it's muted!

Hi Foro!
I just got my new equipment 2 days ago. It is an Autoset with a H4i, exactly like yours.

I heard the same pitch.

At first I suspected the humidifier. I removed it from the APAP in the middle of the night. No more pitch. I reconnected the humidifier still no more pitch.

As there is no motor in the humidifier, the next morning I manualy "played" with the mechanism that connects the humidifier to the APAP and I heard something. So I suspected that mechanism. May be part of that mechanism vibrates when attached to the running machine. I checked the mechanism and there is no grease or any kind or a local lubricant that could damper a vibration. It is metal to metal connection. I haven't added any lubricant yet but I may ad some. As a matter of fact I heard the pitch again this morning at wake-up time (a similar but a less loud pitch). I will wait a couple of days just to see how the situation evolves but I wont tolerate that for the rest of my life!
