Blowing bubbles / gurgling
Blowing bubbles / gurgling
I've been on CPAP about a month now without any problem except for the last two nights. I'd upped the Heater on the Resmed Pro from 1 to 2 for the last two nights ago and seemed to develop a mouth gurgle / bubble both nights (not had a problem previously). I presume this is what's called a mouth leak.
I don't understand how this could be related to humidity/heat but the correlation is 100% so far. I like the higher heat/humidity as it almost totally eliminated a cough I'd had at the lower heat number.
I'm looking for advice and others experiences here. Should I go back to lower heat or look for a way to stop the leaks?
I know I've been very lucky as I've had an easy start and adapted to the machine very well. This is my first real set-back. I woke the wife on the first night and I don't want to drive her into the spare room again.

I too am wondering ...
I too am wondering if higher humidity contributes to leaks.
Last night I upped my setting from 3 to 4 (RemStar h/h) and started getting little leaks that I wasn't getting before (in past couple of weeks) other than if the temperature drops suddenly (is winter here).
Even before last night I had guessed that the occasional drop of water I experience (which don't really annoy me) are actually causing air to force out under the seal if the drop lands on my face near the edge of the mask.
Will look deeper into this.
Cheers

This is called "rainout"
It is water condensing out of the air in the hose/mask as it cools. This can be minimised with the aussie heated hose.
http://www.sleepzone.com.au/
The excessive water in the mask can cause leaks around the seals and spit water out around the edges.

Aha,
You I get some of that - am not quite sure what it is - it seems like air is getting into my mouth from my nose ??? but that doesn't seem to make sense as I have a f/f/ mask.
I do get this noticably with a nasal mask even if mouth is taped shut but I had attributed this effect to CFLEX 'bursting' air into my mouth from my throat.
Am still trying to understand what can go on here, but, I'll bet a Silver Dollar that RG has done experiments in this area & can give a good guestimate of causes.
Cheers

I need to join this discussion. I, too, now that I'm on the Swift AND Cflex, have noticed the sudden burst of air that makes my lips want to part and let out an air bubble of a large proportion. It comes from the mouth, not the throat. I only have my heated humidifier on the 1 setting, so it can't be that. Last night was the first time I tried sleeping with my mouth taped because now my leak number is high (as you know, DSM) and found my lips at times putting sudden pressure against the tape, forcibly.
I can't explain this, either, but it could be why now, since I started using the Swift and Cflex, I am mouth breathing. I never did when I was on the Activa.
DSM, I am going to try to sleep w/out the Cflex on tonight and see if that makes any difference. Aren't I glad I got the machine with the auto and Cflex options when I'm using neither of them anymore ???

As has been told to me, CPAP trains us - now I don't get tummy aches, wind is less of a problem SO last night I turned of CFLEX *& didn't miss it* - wife asked what I had done to quieten the machine so much !.Sleepless on LI wrote: I can't explain this, either, but it could be why now, since I started using the Swift and Cflex, I am mouth breathing. Also I have stopped using RAMP & stopped using nasal sprays etc: - If my nose is congested it just means I breathe slowly for a while but soon I am asleep & any time I wake up nose is absolutely fine. Some nights it has still been a bit congested but I just slow my breathing & go back off to sleep.
CPAP is getting easier & easier & the less gadgetry I have actived the better it seems to work.

I hope you are right about the Cflex being turned off and less leaks. I guess maybe it makes more sense, like you say, the less sophisticated (paraphrasing) the options are that we use, the less that can go awry.
I turned off the Cflex earlier so I wouldn't forget tonight and I am putting the hose back in the down position on my Swift. I think since I connected it in the up position, I have been waking more every time I move to that side. Yes, it's nice not to have to worry about where it is across you during the night, but that was a quick in-your-sleep movement, whereas this turning on the side where the hose is by my head is more of adjust the hose, make sure it's right, move in the right spot on the pillow...just too much to keep in a deep enough sleep.
If I don't get a good night's sleep soon, I am afraid my energy level is going to start to dwindle. It's been at least a full week without a really great sleep. I guess I should be surprised that I'm still as active as I am without a week's worth of decent sleep.
LOL-I used to go for years and now I'm complaining about a week or so. That is a great sign, now that I think about it.

mouth leaking
Generally, there is no correlation between humidity and mouth breathing.
However, there are a few to do, to trouble shoot it.
First, why did you turn your humidifer up?? Was your mouth dry??? If your mouth was dry, then there is a chance that your mouth was coming open before and you didn't realize. In the past my mouth has been so dry that I couldn't part my lips when I woke up (of course this prevented leaking from my mouth)
Two, has your nose been more plugged or congested the last two nights with the increase in humidity? If your nose is more plugged then that would increase your chances of breathing through your mouth.
Did anything else significant change at the same time you changed your humidifier (such as your pressure or your sleeping position, or even an increase in alcohol consumption)??
Ultimatley, I would try turning the humidifier down for 2 nights and see if it happens again, if it doesn't, then back up and see if it happens. If you ARE getting rainout, and if it's a large amount that is collecting in your tube, it narrows the diameter of the tube and makes the machine work harder to get you your pressure. It could be causing minor pressure changes that is causing the air to come out your mouth. Have you had any condensation problems in your mask?

I turned the humidifier up because I had developed a dry cough with CPAP. The increased humidity seemed to relieve that problem.
I don't know if my mouth was open before that but I awoke with my mouth leaking air the last three nights. My mouth was not dry - in fact, moisture wsa bubbling in my mouth with a small amount of air coming from my throat one of those times. I've not had any problems with dry mouth or nose.
The amount of nasal congestion has not changed with the humidity setting and I've never had a problem with it.
The only significant changes were:
1) Changed heater from 1 to 2
2) I stated the night after my last sleep study.
No changes is position or alcholol consumption.
I turned the humidity down last night and still woke up with air leaking from my mouth. It was still moist so it did must not have happened for very long.
I don't detect consendation in the tubes.
I did call the doc today to get the results of the last sleep study. They said he was not going to change my pressure but wanted me to come in earlier than my next appointment. I was scheduled to go the 30th but he wants to see me on the 16th. I'm wondering whats up here????
I ordered the Ruby Red Chin Strap today. It should arrive on Friday so I'll get to try it out to see if it helps. I appreciate the advice on this board from others who turned me onto it.
I keep everyone posted whats going on. I appreciate the support!!!!

mouth leaks
Lori,
Don't your mouth leaks coincide with the switch you made to staight PAP on 10? You spent very little time in 10 when you had it on auto.

Ozij on the case...yea!!!
You know, I don't know, but I think it was more when I went from the Activa to the Swift. But that was at the same time I went onto APAP first. I have been doing the straight CPAP now for about almost a week, I think. Last night I turned off the CFlex, too. as per DSM's suggestion to help with my high leak number (43 on Encorepro). But the best news of the day is, I had ONE episode all night of apnea, no hypopneas and no snores (haven't had any snores or hypops since going back to straight CPAP), giving me an AHI last night of point one. So I will conclude APAP wasn't for me.
Now, the tape across the mouth for the leakage number is horrible, but the number for leakage went back the past two nights I've been doing this to 32-34. Still not great, I don't think. RG said high teens, low twenties. Don't know why my leakage is so high, but it's not stopping my theapy from being very, very productive. Guess turning off the CFlex didn't help the leaks, but it did with the apneas. Is there any correlation between CFlex causing the therapy to become less effective?
I laugh now because now that I have the Remstar Auto with CFlex, I turned off both the option of auto and CFlex, and am on straight CPAP. But at least I have the software on tbis machine, which is becoming better and better to read the results from every morning,
Thanks for your interest in the situation. OH, by the way, the subject of this post, I still had extreme bursts, as I'll call them, by the early morning hours from my mouth, even with a Tegaderm patch over it, that caused one of the sides of the patch to blow out. Don't know what could be causing it. My pressure is only 10 cms...

I thought I'd post a status:
I got the Ruby Red Chin Strap on Friday and have used it the last two nights. I've not been awakened with the leak since I've started using it. It does hurt the beard some and it may have to go if I'm going to continue using it.
I go back to the sleep doc to see whats up on Tuesday.

Is the Ruby chinstrap made of more rigid material than the average item ?. My Respironics premium looks ok but is very floppy & it doesn't take much effort to move my jaw even if it is tight.
Lori,
Last night I switched on APAP on my Remstar - low to 13 high at 16. Had a great night's sleep (compared to the awful night before). I still have CFLEX off - tonight I will bump up lower pressure to 13.5
The great thing about the RemStar Auto with Cflex is we get to play with the features. CFlex was great to help get used to xPAP but for me, I no longer need it.
Cheers

Okay. Refresh my rather elusive still memory. I know you have been keeping the CFlex off, as have I, but I don't remember what you were doing as far as cpap or auto and what your numbers were. Glad, in any event, you had a great night.
I tried my experiment with taking my 10 cms. down a notch to 9 to see if the mouth puffs would stop since they didn't occur on the Activa. Now, I don't know if it was the Clonazepam I took last night to see if the reason I wake up many times a night is my PLMD or if it was that I dropped the pressure one cm, but my AHI went up and my snoring index came back. So I would think it's the drop in pressure. I did, however, sleep from about 12 midnight to almost 6 AM uninterrupted, which is not a usual thing for me. So was it the pill that helped PLMD or was it the fact that it just makes you more tired. I lean towards the fact I am still suffering from the PLMD as even on nights when I've done so much and need a good night's sleep, I am still awake multiple times. I don't even remember turning over last night at all, which is really unusual for me.
In any event, let me know what your numbers were. I'm curious. Maybe I am going to have to start experimenting so that these mouth blasts stop...I am trying to train my tongue, though, like SnoreNoMore2005 spoke of, although I don't know if it can be done with these huge bursts that sre happening.
