not to go against the grain of popular opinion, but the last few nights, all I've done was rinse my face instead of using soap and water, and I've had the best fit I've ever had without leaks.

Mama,

Standard advice is to wash your face every night before masking up. I did this for two years and then quit one year ago and have had no problems with mask or skin.

How tightly are you adjusting the mask? A typical mistake of newbies is to adjust too tightly when they have leaks. This can actually cause more leaks. Review the manufacturer's instructions for tightening and adjusting the headgear.

Have we had a discussion about positional sleep apnea (PSA)? I can't remember. When I see a pressure as high as yours, I always want the patient to understand PSA. I will paste in below a comment I made in another thread about PSA.

BTW, I see this is a new thread. Are you not going to keep posting to this one viewtopic/t40001/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=39 ... 92#p348992 ?

I would like to make you aware of "positional sleep apnea" (PSA). Maybe 40% or more of patients have PSA.

PSA means the apnea is much worse in one sleeping position (on the back) compared to other sleeping positions. For example, my sleep apnea is very severe when I am sleeping on my back.

For people with PSA, the sleeping position can have a big effect on CPAP pressure requirements. For example, I have been titrated in a sleep lab and at home have confirmed my pressure requirements for different positions. On my back I require a pressure of 19 cm (Yow!). On my side or stomach, a pressure of 8.5 cm is sufficient. So I have some devices and train myself to sleep only on side or stomach and use pressure of 8.5 cm.

You may want to make some observations about the possibility of PSA in your case.

Good luck,

This might sound crazy but I have to wash my face and actually put on a lotion...I use a product called infinite aloe, then I let it dry for about 10 min then put on my clean mask. If I just wash my face and no lotion it leaks all over the place. I know it is totally agaist what everyone else says

Depends on your soap...

I like to get really hot water and wash well without soap. Then I dry it really well and FFM and tape both work so much better.

You might need to wear a chin strap just to keep your jaw from relaxing down so far that the mask can't completely cover your lower lip. I know, I know... sounds like a major aggravation, adding a chin strap with a FF mask. But if the jaw drops down a lot during sleep, that's changing the geometry of your face and changing the "fit" of the mask.

Also adding to RG's suggestion ... make sure that the lower back strap is fitted up as high on the back of your skull (occiptial bun sp?) as possible. When it slides down on the back of your neck it is much more likely to change tension as you move your head about during sleep and cause you to lose the seal.

Without a chin strap I don't do well.
I will beat this if I have to go down to 140 pounds with 6% bodyfat. I will beat it!

It took me a good month to learn how to wear my Quattro. I went through a period of a couple weeks of frustration
with leaks everywhere especially near the eyes. Sometime I'm going to modify this mask when I have time to make
it able to sit in a "more upright position" to totally eliminate eye leaks but for now I'm doing good with it.
I figure I have broken in either the mask or my face or both by now. Or I have learned how to make the perfect
headgear adjustment.

Stick with it.

Bill
