Economic Impact On CPAP Treatment

General Discussion on any topic relating to CPAP and/or Sleep Apnea.

Is the weak economy causing you to spend less on CPAP equipment than a year ago?

Yes, I'm buying less equipment even when it's covered by insurance (i.e. I'm trying to save on the co-pay/deductible)

Economic Impact On CPAP Treatment

Curious to see how the economy is affecting everyone's spending on CPAP products. Thanks for your responses!

Well, I'm spending rather more on CPAP equipment this year because last year this time, I was preparing for cancer surgery, and hadn't yet been diagnosed with apnea.... so I wasn't buying ANY CPAP equipment!

I'm spending less because there are no more interesting new models to buy to experiment with

I will mark my 6 month anniversary next week. I am in hopes of finding another FFM at that point. Overall, I look at this as my health and getting my life back. I am not overall planning to spend more but rather what I will need to. If I need a replacement hose, and when I need filters, I will buy them this year.

Just curious what you don't like about the Mirage LIberty. I got one in today and was instantly impressed by the small size and it sealed right up for me, but I've yet to sleep in it so I was just wondering. I could never get the Hybrid to stay sealed for me, especially the nasal pillows...

I just bought a new mask, its been a year since the last one, and I will say that if it wasn't for the fact I have private health cover (which doesn't mean the same thing in Oz as it does in the US) I probably wouldn't have.....

I am spending more than I did 1 year ago.

Why?

Because one year ago I did not know I had apnea and had not been diagnosed.

I consider looking after health the #1 issue that warrants spending a few dollars on. In the next few weeks I will be picking up a 2nd Quattro mask, spare hose and more machine filters. My group insurance will pickup the cost for that. After that I'm looking to pickup a spare machine... group insurance will not pay for that.

I guess I would have to say I am spending more too, for pretty much the same reason. A year ago I didn't know I had sleep apnea. I do have insurance which pays 80% but I have stopped going to my DME. They are so expensive in everything they sell. I have bought a spare hose, a years worth of filters and an extra mask on my own cuz I wanted the extra parts and I didn't want to pay the DME prices. FYI they sell 1 filter for $6. I bought a whole years worth of filters for $12 online. That's $1 a filter... No way I am paying their prices...
I dont suffer from insanity.... I enjoy every minute of it!

I'm also spending more than last year on CPAP....because I didn't find out that I had Sleep Apnea until December 27th, 2008...and I started treatment on December 29th....with the bills coming through this year.

With my economic situation...I'm wishing I didn't have to pay. If only being diagnosed with Sleep Apnea was a qualifying event to increase my FSA. That might make the bills more tolerable. I've already spent 90% of what I'll put in for the year in the first two months of this year. And, that's only a fraction of stuff I've spent money on. Not sure I could claim the stuff I got on CPAPauction or the stuff I got that weren't directly related to CPAP treatment...but are a part of things.

Like would FSA pay for me to buy headboard for my bed? (though I'm probably going to use the points on my credit card to buy one).

Then there's like tons of co-pays/co-insurance for this and that....the latest I might have to fork out for is the expensive nasal spray the doctor is having me try now for my congestion problem. Its more expensive that the stuff I used to get prescribed for my seasonal allergies....and I wasn't always filling that regularly, because I already found that too expensive. Though I recall seeing it available as generic on some overseas pharmacy site that I used to use, however that site seems to have gone away now.

Not sure what I'm going to do....

The Dreamer.

I have all I need and it works well so I'm not spending any extra - but that has nothing to do with the economic situation.

I love the Mirage Liberty but have days when I am so stuffed up from allergies that I could really use a different style ff mask .. but then I am very claustrophobic .. so it just might be the Liberty is the only one that does not bring on the claustrophobia ..
