Disappointed in "The Doctors" TV show

Post by LoQ » Wed Mar 04, 2009 12:08 am

Tuesday "The Doctors" had a question about snoring from the snorer's wife. The couple indicated that the husband has sleep apnea. Not one single doctor on the panel talked about appropriate treatment. No mention of CPAP therapy at all, not to mention it being the gold standard of treatment.

Here was a chance for actual medical doctors to strike a blow to the public's ignorance, fear, and revulsion about CPAP therapy. If they had just presented it as a very helpful and appropriate treatment for snoring caused by OSA, and also if they had only talked about the dangers of not treating OSA, it might have been a step towards getting the public educated and also less biased against this therapy.

What a disappointment.

A link to the show synopsis, and here is what they have about snoring:
Stop the Snoring

Arti, 32, keeps his wife, 31-year-old Nitin, awake all night long, but for all the wrong reasons! His loud snoring echoes through their house, scares their two children and has even forced the couple to sleep in separate beds for the last two years.

Snoring affects 37 million Americans, with 42 percent of men being regular snorers, as opposed to just 31 percent of women. “That’s because women have larger airwayes, and we usually don’t get obese around our necks,” Dr. Lisa says.

In addition to short, thick necks, other causes of snoring include obesity, excessive alcohol consumption, abnormalities in the nose and throat and sleep apnea, which Arti suffers from. “You’re not getting enough sleep,” Dr. Jim says. “If you’re snoring that badly and having apnea, you are not getting a good night’s sleep every night, so you’re living life chronically sleep-deprived, and that’s going to affect your weight. It can eventually affect your heart, so you really need to deal with this, and there are things you can do to lower the effects of the snoring.”

Ways to reduce snoring include sleeping on your side, avoiding alcohol before bed, exercising and losing weight. Surgical procedures are also available to fix a deviated septum, a floppy soft palate and other possible issues that cause snoring.
That last paragraph is pretty much all they said about treatment. Bummer. Maybe they are ignorant, too.

i really dislike that show. i know they are trying to do the dr. oz thing, but they don't explain things as well and really gloss over their topics trying to cover so many during their show with their pretty for televisions "doctors". that is really disappointing that they did not talk about proper treatment for apnea.

i did appreciate rosie o'donnel's segment on the view when she talked about her sleep apnea, testing methods and cpap therapy and had dr. breus on the show. she even wore her nasal pillow masks for all to see! i know she turns off a lot of people, but at least she brought some real awareness to millions of viewers.

Yes.

Doctors are human, too. I'd say that far too many doctors have the same ignorance, fear, and revulsion about CPAP therapy as the general public. What a shame.

You are assuming these guys are actually competent medical doctors? I don't trust "tv" doctors, not matter how noble they are when they start out, they all ultimately degenerate into sensationalism and provide bad if not dangerous medical advice and opinions. JMO

Hey, I hate to ask a stupid question, but the original post above says that women have larger airways.
Why is that? I failed biology and anatomy, so I was just curious; I'd never heard of that before.
Also, the article says that over 40 million are effected by sleep disorders. Or did I misread that?

Doctors are learning fast, though, and we are helping them. The last time I went to see my GP, he asked a lot about sleep apnea.
I happened to have my sleep data printout (my 3-month report from my Rescan). I just wanted to show him my hours of therapy. He seemed amazed that I knew how to talk intelligently about the report and also wanted to file it into my folder. So, to be fair, let's be patient and also view things from the doctor's side. They are busy, often stressed, must stay up-to-date on many medical studies and procedures, etc. I think we have to place some blame upon the medical schools for not offering a little more training. But things are changing fast.

Angelina watched this show and afterwards told me I needed to lose weight in my neck and get a septoplasty so she wouldn't have to sleep with Hannibal Lechter anymore. great.

When I read that, I thought, "I'll bet the lady doc is mistaken about that." Dunno if she's right or not.

As prevalent as OSA is, there are many, many other "sleep disorders." Insomnia is the one that most doctors probably think of when they think, "sleep disorder."

That's great, Jay!
