ResMed H4i

Post by Mr. Smiley » Mon Mar 02, 2009 4:07 pm

Ive been using my S8 Elite II with the H4i Humidifier for 5 nights now. Each night i warm the water before use for about 20 min or so. About 5 or 6 hours after i go to sleep i wake up with a dry mouth. I have it set to 5 and still have plenty of water left when i get up usually 7.5 to 8 hours of sleep. I can go higher, and i plan to tonight. Im wondering if this is just a personal problem or are there others with this same problem...

I also use the H4i and I am about 3 hours west of you, so we have similar humidity and climate. I fill my tank each evening and have it set on the highest level (6) because I am a serious mouth breather. I fought severe rainout but by cranking the heat up and using a hose cover I solved that problem. BUT........my tank is nearly empty every morning.

IMO, you might have some performance issues with your humidifier.

Well I will turn it all the way up, i dont have rain out yet but if i keep having dry mouth, as i too am a mouth breather, may call the DME back and get different H4i or a different Humidifier all together.

Have you tried Biotene OralBalance Gel before puting your mask on? My practice has gradually become one of first rinsing my mouth with a wetting mouthwash such as Oasis or Biotene OralBalance Mouthwash followed by spreading a bit of the gel around my mouth with my tongue. It has helped minimize the drymouth a lot.
All the products mentioned are readily available at drugstores such as Walgreens, CVS, or many others.

The absolute best humidifier is the Fisher & Paykel HC150. It has a large water chamber, senses the ambient temp in the room & adjusts heat as temp changes. These often come up 2nd hand at around $75 - not sure of the new cost. But they are popular so never stay for sale for long. Cpap.com sell them new for $149.

I have a Resmed H4i, and have severe dry mouth just about every night. (I don't think its the Humidifiers fault)

I have tried the Biotene mouthwash, and it doesn't help much. (quit using it after a week)

I had it set to MAX and was getting some rain out without a hose cover. Now I have a hose cover and had just a little hint of rain out. Just a few drops in the nose area where it is most annoying.

My water lasts 8 hours+ if I don't have a lot of leaks. If my mask leaks a lot I run it dry some times. (I just take the mask off when it runs dry and go back to sleep)

I really would like to get this dry mouth thing fixed. It can't be good having to peel your teeth off the inside of your mouth every morning. I'm seeing my doctor next week and will be asking her.

Im going to give the H4i a few more days, I have to call the DME back and get a different mask. The Swift LT just isnt for me, I like the Quattro, so i may end up asking for a HC 150. Before when i asked I was told that It Will NOT work with the Elite II.

It seams to me that earlier when i had the humidifier set lower i had less dry mouth then i do now. And it lasted all night till i woke up. I do fill my tub to just a hair over the full mark and i still have about a 1/4 inch of water left after the average 8 hour night. I started out on 3 and last night set to 6, and had rain, not bad, just a lot of droplets on the mask.

Would a room humidifier help? Right now there is a DEHumidifier running in the basement.

Certainly it would.

A dehumidifer and air conditioner are both counter productive but may be neccessary.

I went to bed last night thinking ill reduce the setting from 6 to 4 and see if i get a whole nights use out of the humidifier and not have as bad a dry mouth....... I Was wrong! I was peeling my cheeks and lips off my teeth after about 4 hours of use.... So i cranked it all the way up, and i woke up once again with the same problem I stuck my finger in the tank and it was COLD! It decided to take the night off....

The DME called me this morning and said thell make an appoitment to get it looked at or replaced.

I asked Apria to upgrade and send me the H4 as I have the H3 right now. I just got a package on my door step today. It is only the H4i plastic water chamber!!! They did not send me the actual humidifier!!! The new chamber was 37 dollars----I guess I will call Apria tomorrow and ask if they are sending me the actual H4 LOL!
