The why of nightime bathroom visits
My husband was really impressed that from night one havent been up to use the bathroom. He asked what the connection is between bathroom visits and Apnea. I dont know what it is Im just glad I dont have to get up after Im all settled in.
What is the connection?

Re: The why of nightime bathroom visits
I haven't noticed any difference. I'm still up at least once per night. But my Comfort Gel FF has a quick-disconnect, so it really isn't any more hassle than pre-cpap.

Re: The why of nightime bathroom visits
As I understand it, it's caused by your heart attributing the low oxygen saturation caused by apnea to fluid overload, thus triggering the renal system to filter out more water. Also, a major symptom of heart failure may be fluid overload (often seen as swollen feet and legs), and of course apnea causes heart issues. I used to get up at least 3-4 times a night, sometimes 5-6 times, and since my bathroom is downstairs and my bedroom upstairs, I really had to wake UP to negotiate the stairs. Now, I don't get up once; when I wake up with the urge to go, I look at the clock and find it's time to get up anyway. I'd stay compliant with CPAP just for that, if no other reason!

Thanks, that is very interesting!
I must say at this point that has to be the biggest "noticable" benefit for me. Not quite to the euphoria stage yet.
Catnip, it's a big reason to stay compliant, I too got up 5 or more times, tripping over dogs, stepping in hairballs in my bare feet.
Those days are over.

ADH Stops Urine, ANP Makes It Dilute
Well, I would go with normalization of ADH with ANP taking on a secondary role, but I tend to be a little contrary. What is the connection?
How Come That Is?
SAG

Aromatherapy may help CPAP compliance. Lavender, Mandarin, Chamomile, and Sweet Marjoram aid in relaxation and sleep. Nature's Gift has these and a blend of all four called SleepEase.

That Can Of Worms...
I guess you never heard the story about the lumpy 420 expiratory limb...

Rose.....
For me, apnea was causing extremely high blood pressure at night....and the high blood pressure was causing at least one....and sometimes two trips to the bathroom.
Others believe in enzyme or hormonal reasons for trips to the potty....but those explanations just don't work for me.
I think it's a simple question of hydraulics......high pressure blood into the kidneys means high pressure urine discharge. High pressure urine pushes against the valve holding it in the bladder....and that translates into the urge to pee. Mechanical cause and effect.....simple......not much more complicated than that.

Re: The why of nightime bathroom visits
Without pondering the mechanics of why CPAP therapy can have such a dramatic effect on night time washroom visits, I just want to say that from the first night of use (only 3 nights total) I have stopped visiting the washroom anywhere from three to six times a night ...... every night. I was secretly convinced I was turning diabetic even though I had no such symptoms during the day.
Hurray!!!
Hurray!!!

Is that the thread with all the reductionist graphs?StillAnotherGuest wrote:I guess you never heard the story about the lumpy 420 expiratory limb...
I would be seriously happy if one day I understood 5% of what was said there.
Re: The why of nightime bathroom visits
I am SO GLAD you asked this. This question was bothering me as well. I told the technician last Wednesday night when I went to do my 2nd study that I would be getting up A LOT during the night to go to the bathroom.SleepyRose wrote:My husband was really impressed that from night one havent been up to use the bathroom. Well, the machine they had hooked up to me must have worked good because I only got up one time. I was really happy about that and didn't realize there was a connection until then. I just didn't understand the connection.

As my doctor told me that when you come out of rem sleep your body ask why and you kind of have the urge to go. If you stay in rem sleep with the machine you don't wake up until you really have to go.
