Mirage Liberty questions

Post by vaderboi » Thu Feb 19, 2009 12:47 pm

I've been using the Quattro ffm for the past two weeks, but the forehead strap aggravates an inflamed nerve in my forehead. I kept a bit of padding under the forehead strap and loosened it to try and alleviate with the Quattro ffm, but I had to fight leaks all night.

I just called my DME and they are going to send me a Liberty mask. I'm just wondering if others have tried the Liberty and how they feel about it. I'm not really sure about the nasal pillow part of it since I'm a mouth breather, but I'm willing to give it a try to alleviate the nerve in my forehead and to try to reduce my leak rate.

I primarily use nasal pillows on the SWIFT LT, but when I have a bad cold, I use the Mirage Liberty, so I can breathe through my mouth as needed. I tried a lot of other full face masks, but they all pressed into my eyes (my eyes are very narrow).

I have to have the liberty a little tight, because I wear a full beard, but it is tolerable.

The Liberty (or the Hybrid alternative) may well solve most of your problem.

As you can see, there is no forehead support to deal with. In terms of the mouth-breathing, it offers the unique blend of two effective interfaces: nasal pillows which direct air through the nose and a mouth cushion that isolates the mouth to allow breathing with no loss of pressure. It is a learning curve in terms of finding the right fit with the straps and the pillows, but if your DME is good enough to provide all the pillows for you to try and you get the right mouth cushion size, it should work fairly well. I have been using the Liberty for a bit more than a month and find it an improvement over the Quattro I had. The replacement came because of leaks around the nose irritating my eyes. I have found that using the largest nasal pillows that will fit in my nostrils works best. Taping the pillows in place with paper surgical tape helps keep them in place with a fairly good seal.

I loved the Liberty, I just could not get the leaks around my nose to stop.

I love the Liberty and have to be careful about the nasal leaking. A new thing has been, when the hose swivels, it re-directs the air from the front vents, which makes a sound like the mask is leaking. I somewhat wake up and then realize it is not the nose and move the dang hose ..

I have pretty good success with the Hybrid most of the time, so I thought I would with the Liberty as well, since are as so close in design. I tried the small and large, and neither one of them work for me. My problem it's too much pressure on my teeth between my upper lip and nose. If I loosen it, I get leaks I can't control. The Hybrid doesn't bother me there at all.

With either one of these, though, you can breathe through your mouth or nose.

I've been using a Liberty for about six months now. I found that the small cushion seals better, but can push your lips against your teeth causing sores. You want to use the largest nasal pillows that will fit into your nares for the best seal there. At high pressure its necessary to use additional support on the nasal pillows to keep them from popping out. Medical tape works well, and there are posts on this forum with good sugestions for using panty hose or stockings for this.
