Heart Racing

Post by rwalker » Fri Feb 13, 2009 2:29 pm

I have been on CPAP for around 2 months now and am getting around 5/6 hrs of sleep a night wearing my mask. I sometimes take my mask of around an hour before my alarm goes off, i go back to sleep but since i have been on my treatment when i wake up a few times in this hour and my heart seems to be racing, is this normal and why is it happening, before i was diagnosed i cant remember waking up at all. I have been diagnosed with mild sleep apnoea with an AHI of 12 with my oxygen saturation going down to 75%

If you're taking your mask off and going back to sleep, you're having apneas and that's why your heart is racing......you're stressing it......sleeping without your mask. That's a NO NO!

Congrats, for just taking your treatment half seriously, personally I'd want to not take a chance of dieing in the morning. You know better, why would you tempt fate, you won't see me do it. Jim

1. You need to leave your mask on during that morning stretch, since you're more likely to have REM sleep that late, and you're more likely to have hypopneas-apneas during REM.

2. Tachycardia (over 100 bpm) is something you need to make sure your MD knows about. It could just be that you're stressing your heart in the morning before you get up since you're not using your CPAP when you need it the most, but it could also be other things that may need to get ruled out. Only an MD can do so.

Sure sounds like apneas you're having in the hour or so you don't have the mask on. I had this about once every couple of months before going on cpap. Not a lot, but enough to scare the begeebers out of me. Mine was up to 180 beats a minute during these episodes!! I had to get up and walk around, and within two or three minutes, it would be back down to normal.

Scary stuff.
