water backing into hose
water backing into hose
Help, I just got a mask I love, pillow mask, and twice now when I've turned on the machine the water starts gurggling and working its way up the hose. WHAT HAVE I DONE WRONG, still a newbie.
Re: water backing into hose
That's just "rainout," condensation in your hose. You can try putting the machine on the floor or at least lower than bed level, or you might need a hose cover or an Aussie Heated Hose. Ultimately, the Aussie Heated Hose is the most effective and works when all else fails.

Re: water backing into hose
Make sure you don't fill it above the water line, usually halfway up. If you find water in the hose during the night or in the morning, try covering the hose with a blanket, keep it warm. Or last but not least, turn down the humidifier:-P

Re: water backing into hose
Gurgling? I hope that's just dramatic license! What exactly happens when you turn on the machine?
Rainout is just condensation like you get on the inside of your windshield or the outside of your beer mug. You get more when the outside of the hose is colder than the air inside. A little may then drip down but it usually isn't a problem unless it's dripping down on your nose. Hence the advice to keep the machine lower than your nose. Actually you just need to make sure part of the hose hangs lower than your face, not the whole machine.
The only time I heard anything resembling gurgling was when I tipped the water from the humidifier INTO the cpap machine - and the sound may have been mostly in my panicked imagination even then. I hope that's not what you're describing.

I also had this problem. I solved it by using a CPAP hose cover from http://cozeehose.com
I hope this helps

Re: water backing into hose
Gurgling sounds can happen in the hose when there is condensation in the hose and cpap air is blowing it around where it's collected in a low spot of the hose. Doesn't have to be water in the cpap machine itself.MidnightOwl wrote:Gurgling? I hope that's just dramatic license!

Re: water backing into hose
It's not rainout, this is not condensation. What is happening is that when I turn on my CPAP machine the water in the humidifier starts to bubble and sputter, and the water travels up the hose. I have the humidifier turned to the lowest setting.
I'll try wrapping the hose to keep it warm.
Any other suggestions?

Check to be sure the HH is properly fitted to the machine. Check to be sure the HH is not over filled. Check to be sure the machine and HH are sitting on a level surface. After that, I'm out of ideas.

You make no mention of which make/model humidifier, if it ever worked right, or how much water you put in it. So I can only assume it is either over filled or assembled incorrectly. Have you reviewed the manual that came with it?crowhaven wrote:It's not rainout, this is not condensation. If this isn’t rocket science why are there so many spaceshots?

Re: water backing into hose
This is one of the few cases where it really would help to know what kind of humidifier and cpap you are using. It certainly does sound like the humidifier is overfilled but I don't think I even could overfill mine (Remstar plus M with integrated humidifier pre humidifier redesign) because the water would slosh out before I could put it in place. And I can't see the humidifier when the machine is running anyway. You've actually seen the water bubbling? Or do you just hear it? Does it only happen at start up?
Also what pressure are you using?
Finally, I assume you've made sure there is no water in your hose from previous nights.

Re: water backing into hose
So, it's gurgling (bubbling like water that's boiling?) in the humidifier chamber itself. Does it splatter into the hose or actually start running into the hose? Does it happen as soon as you turn the system on, or does it take a while for it to start (after the water starts heating). Since you said you have the humidifier turned on the lowest setting, I'm assuming you're using some type of heated humidifier rather than just something in passover mode.crowhaven wrote:It's not rainout, this is not condensation. In your first post, you mentioned that "twice now when I've turned on the machine," that this happened, which sounds to me like it was working fine at some point. Is that right? Are you using the same kind of water as always (should be distilled).
I know, a lot of questions!

You're not filling the humidifier chamber above the "fill line", are you?crowhaven wrote:It's not rainout, this is not condensation. The only times I've had bubbling, gurgling, spitting, spattering sounds in the humidifier itself were when I've overfilled it. Has happened when I've overfilled the older Respironics humidifier and the Fisher & Paykel HC 150 separate humidifier.
