I think their theory is that the inhale keeps the airway open, and so the exhale sends it right back through...

I know personally I just wouldn't breathe thru my nose period. As someone who has always had allergies I'm pretty trained to mouth breathe (although as stated other places, I tend to keep my mouth closed during xPAP).

Another concern is the adhesive. Personally I find the adhesive on breathe right strips to be awful harsh. I can imagine that the necessary adhesive to keep those things in place and sealed would be awful rough on your nares. Perhaps over time they would "toughen up".

For what is worth, we should keep an open mind.

Someday, something will replace the present day cpap therapy, wether this is the holy grail or not.

I would not hesitate to try this product.

It appears to work just backwards of whats needed.

One it obstructs the airway some on intake, more on exhale, which makes no sense in both cases. Apnea isn't on exhale, exhale opens the airway easy. Apnea is a intake problem, anything that slows the flow, causes the airway to collapse easier. Jim

I think the theory is that it impedes your airflow enough on exhale to build up sufficient air pressure to keep your airway open. Like Jim says tho, when one inhales the airway would shut right down. Also, any pressure would likely cause the mouth to pop open (like it does when you have a cold) eliminating pressure buildup.

I love these products that are "clinicly tested". This basically means they hand them out to a bunch of people and ask them if they felt any better! I think I will save my money and buy some detox pads for the bottoms of my feet.

I agree. I know that I have a problem with exhalation; I can sometimes sense as I'm waking up that I am completely unable to exhale. Some of the data from my sleep study supports that understanding, and in fact it may be more of a problem than inhalation in my case. I have never experienced the waking-up-gasping-for-breath kinds of events that so many report, so I was really shocked that I have OSA to begin with.

There is a legitimate clinical trial for this device going on. They are recruiting people now. It's a large trial. I really don't think a company with a bogus device would engage in a study with people from the Mayo Clinic, Stanford, et al. The device may not pan out, but I'm thinking if they must have some internal evidence that it works for some people or they wouldn't foot such a large bill unless they thought they had a chance of a positive outcome from the trial.

If anybody is wondering what a device like this might feel like: as a very rough approximation only, partially pinch your nostrils closed during exhale only.

Wow. I tried it. It makes me think I want to try the provent. I'm able, when I'm awake, to duplicate the problem I have exhaling by conscious effort. So I tried doing that and then pinched my nose slightly as described by SWS. I COULD NOT any long block exhalation through my nose once I pinched it slightly.

This is kind of interesting to me, and I'm thinking about asking my doctor to write me a prescription for this so I can try it out.
