Selecting First CPAP Products

Post by ericlhyman » Fri Jan 30, 2009 3:23 pm

I was just diagnosed with "severe" sleep apnea with some insomnia. I also have asthma, TMD, respiratory allergies, fibromyalgia (including chronic neck pain), and acid reflux (necessitating adding a 6" wedge to keep my upper body elevated in bed). I am 52 and am not overweight (5'6", 139 lb).

I have work travel to rural areas of Africa, where electricity may be unreliable so a portable machine with 110-240 volt operation and a battery is necessary and bottled water use has to be used. I prefer to sleep on my side.

What TYPE of xPAP are you being scripted for? Once you know that I'd be inclined to PM Johnny Goodman providing full info on script and expected situations and ask his advice on which equipment. Or you "might" get someone "up" on use of CPAP w/unreliable electrical power by calling their toll-free number.

I am considering getting a backup system for travel and also when the power is out. This winter has taught me that I need one.
The Everest II is a good possibility for me, and all that is holding me back is the cost, which is about $550, with the battery included.
If I could find a good used one for about $300, I would consider it. Maybe all seniors will get some "Obama" refunds, I'm not sure.
Here is the information about it: http://www.aeiomed.com/products/everest/

If I had to guess... you're going to need to have a full face mask (based on a respiratory allergies).

Other thing that I'd guess... is that a chin strap won't be good for your TMD... I have TMJ and wear a Hybrid mask. I won't wear a chin strap because of my TMJ.

I don't know yet. The doctor is calling in the prescription to a company that will call me.

Well "C-Flex" indicates it will be a Respironics model, but gives no indication of which model. Don't accept a Respironics w/Plus in its name. None of the Plus models are fully data capable.

I have seen solar battry chargers sold online, that may be an option if electric service is not reliable. Just Google solar battery charger
