Back from the Everglades - 4 full nights of great sleep

Post by CKayaker » Mon Jan 26, 2009 4:57 pm

I just got back from a five-day/four-night kayaking trip in the 10,000 Islands area of the Everglades. After a lot of research, I decided to go ahead and purchase an Everest 2 w/o humidifier, a battery pack, and four spare batteries. The machine did exactly what I was hoping it would do - give me 4 full nights of sleep. I have been in outdoor education and recreation for the past 20 years and a have always had to carry my own tent and camp a fair distance from my groups because of my loud snoring. Since I started using a cpap, I have done several long term (4 nights or longer) camping trips. In each case, I felt lousy by the end of the trip. No longer. The Everest 2 worked for me. It was worth its weight (12lbs) in gold and didn't really take up that much space. The machine, it's battery pack, 4 back-up batteries, and hose fit perfectly into a #5 Seal-line drybag. I stored my comfort gel mask in with some fleece clothing for more protection. I am stoked. I even used it to take a nap in the truck on the way home; something I've never been able to do before. My only concern is with my mask. I'm going to have to find a hard case for it - Anyone know of one?

check the pelican cases... not sure what sizes they come in though.

How hard does it need to be? Rubbermaid makes hard plastic cases in an assortment of sizes. Check the local supermarkets in the housewares section. There are also disposable storage boxes made by ziplock (and others) that might work well for you. Best part is they are fairly inexpensive.

Thanks - both good suggestions. The pelican box is a bit of overkill but I'm going to find some old school hard tupperwear bowl that fits the mask.

Pelicans come in all sizes, from tiny all the way up to giant-sized cases. I've also seen a few river outfitters that sell "dry boxes", in various sizes. But I like the Tupperware idea. Nice and simple.

Whether I'll "ever again!" be able to enjoy my overnight canoe trips has been bothering - so this is very cheering. I think kayaks require more careful loading than canoes, but my instinct would be to wrap the whole CPAP get up in a sleeping bag before stowing it as usual - I usually wrap my sleeping bag and tent in Hefty bags before putting them in my dry bags.

Glad to hear the forecast calls for paddling....and the Everglades remain on my list. Long way from the Northwest....
