Air leaks, sore on nose, pressure marks?

Post by !tinkerbell! » Tue Jan 20, 2009 9:04 pm

Do many of you experience that squealing-balloon kind of noise when the air leaks? What about a red sore on the bridge of your nose, and other kinds of mask-marks on your face?

It would help if you would fill in your profile so we will know what kind of mask and machine you are using!

Yes, I have a red mark on the bridge of my nose and that area is tender ~ like all the time now. There are red marks kind of on my cheeks but those go away after a while. I get the squeeking sounds with air leaks, when I lay on my back. I thought I would get that when I layed on my sides, but actually it seems to work better when I am on my sides. That is good, because I didn't ever sleep on my back much anyway. I made a sort of sleep mask to keep the light out (when I have to sleep in the daytime - night shift worker here) and that sort of helps make the pressure from the mask on the bridge of my nose not quite so bad. It doesn't seem to mess up the seal of the mask on my face surprisingly.

I have a nasty red sore on my nose....it bugs me. And, I'm not totally sure what to do about it. I suspect that continuing to use my mask and the added humidity aren't making it any better....in fact worse.

The squeak of airleaks is kind of frustrating as well. I can find a position laying on my back where it stops...but if I roll over to my side, it'll leak until I adjust my straps for that position....and then back again.

I tend to spend the majority of the night on my back, so I guess I need to work on staying that way. But, that just isn't me.

Now my sinuses ache....

Debating whether I want to see my doctor again yet....

I started off with the Profile LIte Nasal mask aslo. It gave me fairly good results. However, the sore nose was a problem some of the time because of the tightness of the straps to prevent leaks.
Now, after more than 2 years on CPAP I found the Mirage Activa Nasal mask. Gone are the red marks and the sore nose! Also, the only leaks that I get are when I am hot and my face starts to sweat, then it leaks a little. Other than that this mask has been the best one for me. Straps are very loose but it seals great with the activa system.
Just something for you to consider before you go back to the doctor!

I am a newbie to this forum and to sleep therapy (This month!) I am having trouble adjusting to the mask, the red marks on the bridge of the nose as well. I am still adjusting. Started with Resmed Mirage, then tried Resp. Comfort Gel. I had to go back to the Mirage. I had too many leaks around my eyes and the "comfort" part of the Comfort Gel wsn't working. Also have the SleePAP pillow which helps, since I am a side sleeper. This forum I am sure will help a lot. Thanks for all the information! I look forward to hearing other folks. Gary

Actually, I was reading about the Mirage Activa LT mask yesterday....wondering if this is something that I might want to try on my own, can't seem to find sizing info for it....

The sizing tool on cpap.com says the Mirage Activa is not recommended for my measurements....(says the same thing about the Profile Lite....so I'm inclined to believe it).

I use a Resmed Ultra Mirage, which is not the newest version (Quattro), but quite similar. I've been on cpap for 2 years, and am set a a pressure of 12. The first 4 months of using my cpap machine I had all kinds of problems with air leaks, sore bridge of my nose, & waking up often because of general discomfort. I was throwing it onto the floor halfway through the night & about ready to scrap the whole idea! But then, through a friend, I heard about a company recruiting cpap patients to participate in a study group, testing a new product meant to eliminate all of these issues. Long story short....the product worked so well that it has recently been offered on the market. I am receiving my monthly supply locally through a supplier, but I know there is a website that sells the product, which is called RemZzzs. I believe the site's address is the same, only with the .com at the end. I'm telling you, I sleep all night with no leaks, no more sores on my face, and just feel great! It literally has changed my life & allowed my cpap therapy to do its job of keeping my airway open. Hopefully, this info. will help you and many others.

Tinkerbell,

I just looked up the site and the product sounds very good. I have a couple of question for you, though. Are these products washable and stretchable and are they hyperallergenic?

Waiting to hear from you,

Thanks,
Anne

Anne, I read that the manufacturer doesn't reccomend washing since it will shrink and/or lose its absorption quality. They are stretchable, since that's how each person can adjust it to fit their own face. Not sure about hypoallergenic, but I do know they claim to be made of all natural fiber. Did you read the FAQS on their website? It covers alot of peoples questions.

Just gotta find the right mask - I have found that, like others here, that comfortgel is an oxymoron. It feels great when you put it on and you wake up in pain and with red marks.

About these RemZzzs, they are $1 a night. $30 is quite a bit to pay for seeing if you can live with this option, but I am interested in these as an alternative to having to wash the mask skirt every night. Think they do samples?

Emailed them. They seem like really nice folks. I am going to try this product and let you guys know. I am crazy careful and still have very interesting leak lines in my reports.

What is the website for the product that eliminates leaks? I haven't been able to find it.

I also use the Mirage Activa nasal mask. No leaks and very comfortable for me. My head straps are very loose so no deep imprints from the mask on my face.

Thanks for the info, Tinkerbell. I couldn't afford to to use them regulary and they don't deliver to Canada anyway. Even if they did, with the exhange rate and 13% tax on top of shipping it would cost even more.

Maybe when demand increases they will be able to bring the price down.

When you think about it, having sleep apnea is expensive. You not only need a machine, and mask but various other things that aren't covered such as pap cap (so fine hair doesn't get broken from velcro fasteners) Breathe Rite strips, other nasal stuff, distilled water, hose covers, software, memory cards and memory readers, and whatever will work to try to stop the leaks. Oh, yes, now I need a custom wooden box to keep my machine in so that it doesn't tip over again and get ruined because the humidifier leaks into it. I also need to get a longer hose. Those BreatheRite strips are expensive too. 30.00 before tax. Maybe insurance should cover some of these other necessities that are needed to continue cpap therapy.

Since I can't get the remzzzs I will try different material to see if I can find one that works for me.
