First Night back on CPAP in 6 months

Post by chriscummings83 » Fri Jan 16, 2009 6:26 am

I haven't slept on APAP for 6 months due to never being able to fall asleep or stay asleep. I figured I was getting to grumpy and tired. Last night I slept for only 3 hours but was the best results I have ever had on record (encorepro)

3 HRs
90% @ 10cm
NR - 0
FL - 1.3 (a little scary never had this before, but I think it is due to my tonsils being removed and now my uvula hangs further back in my throat)
OA - 1.6
H - 3.3
VS - 6.5
AHI - 4.9
AVG Leak on LT mask 28.04

I am very curious of why I cannot stay asleep for more that 4 hours every. Only one night after I had 2 beers did I stay asleep for 7 hours.

Continue to use the xpap. The more you use it, the more you will adapt to it. You should see that you sleep time increases as you adjust. I sleep about 6 hours per night. I used to sleep (pre-xpap) 10 or more hours. I think that now I get such good sleep that I require less. How do you feel after your 3 hours? Is there something in particular that wakes you after 3 hrs?
Try to go to bed at the same time every night. Have a bed time routine that you stick to. Don't have any caffeine after 12 noon. Don't eat within 3 hrs of bed time. Don't take naps ( at least not in the beginning), you want to be tired at bed time.

Checking your charts, was it an apnea that woke you?

I am using an M series and was waking up several times a night also. Finally one night I woke up and looked at the machine which was shutting down on it's own. The lights on top were flashing, once it shut down it started right back up. I exchanged that new machine only two months old for another one which turned out to be remanufactured and I am sleeping through much more. I have woke up at night with the most being two times but I fall right back to sleep.

I checked the readout and saw nothing on there that would wake me it was a malfunctioning machine.

Check your machine if you can.

I am with you on this. I don't seem to be able to sleep more than 2 hours in a row without waking up. I can't figure what causes me to wake up because I have an Auto and my numbers look great. I JUST WAKE UP!!! Then it takes a couple of minutes or more to fall back asleep, then two hours later I wake again. At least 4 full awakes a night sometimes more.
Very frustrating.

After 3 monthes I still wake up often at night. I think my body is still reacting at night and thinking, "what the **** is this **** thing strapped to my head doing here?" I can usually go right back to sleep, and overall I feel much more rested even after waking several times, than before.

Would you consider taking a sleep aid before bed? I have found both melatonin or generic sleeping pill (diphenhydramine) to be quite effective. Usually out in 20 mins. and stay out until the alarm clock goes.

Many others have had good success with these too. See other posts by searching the boards. Good luck.

I tried the tylenol sleep pills and they didnt really do anything. I didn't fall asleep any faster and I still woke up in 3-4 hours. Maybe I'll try the other stuff you mentioned

Switch it to cpap mode and see how well you sleep.

Sorry didn't see the last post till now.
Last night

Slept 3h:46m
NR - 0.0
FL - 1.1
OA - 1.3
H - 1.9
VS 6.9
AHI 0 3.2
avg leak 33.72

I changed the setting to 9-11 auto and moved to cflex 3 and seemed to help.
I am also sick, have a head cold and can't breathe through my nose until I put cpap on.
Tonight I get my new Autoset II and we'll see what happens.

Put it on 10 for a week. LEAVE the setting alone for one week and see how you do. I myself am very sensitive to the pressure changes. Several of us that hang out here are. I think you may be one too.

That sounds good, I have played around with auto for almost a year and never worked. So I will play with my new Resmed AutosetII and see how the week goes. After one week on to try full pressure 10cm.

Thanks guys
