My next problem....

Post by TheDreamer » Thu Jan 15, 2009 8:29 pm

Looks like I developed a nose sore....on the bridge. Guess that's what I get for going from nasal pillows to a nasal mask.

It just has to be the sensitive part of my nose bridge....old childhood injury caused by running down a dark hallway and discovering a dark wooden bookshelf standing in the middle of it (on a dolly)...just enough tilt to only mash my glasses into the bridge of my nose and smack me in the forehead.

Not sure if it was the first night or the second night with the nasal mask that irritated the spot...but the cold and windy weather right now probably didn't help...it didn't start bothering me until I got home.

I don't know if I have anything to put on it to sooth things. I thought I had broken down and gotten something for my sore nares when I had the nasal pillow mask, but evidently...I did not. Wonder what I'll do tonight....not sure when I'll hit a drug store or what.

The Dreamer.

If you still have the old nasal mask, use it until the bridge of your nose is less sensitive.

In the future, try to have your straps a little looser. That has worked for me.

1. A lot of nasal masks have an adjustment right below the part on your forehead; Try adjusting it so it moves a little bit away from the bridge of your nose to relieve the pressure.

2. Try some sort of barrier; whether it be paper tape or plain old vaseline.

If this doesn't relieve it, your mask probably needs to be replaced with one with a better fit.

I thought there was some reason to avoid Vaseline....though I know why I'm going to avoid the jar that I have. Last time I used it, I was having a problem with hemorrhoids....

I was actually just looking at masks on cpap.com and cpapauction.com, according to cpap.com...the mask I have isn't recommended based on the measurements I entered. Neither was the nasal mask I had before. But, I remolded the gel just now...so we'll see if that helps.

Meanwhile, I'm tempted to throw out more bids on a mask or two.... it has been a long time since I've done online auctions, I think I remember why I had to stop. Hopefully, I won't do anything silly like end up with a dozen masks.

Geezz!!

Where is your sense of adventure? They can keep each other company if nothing else!!

Yep, wouldn't want to use the vaseline -- it may break down the silicone faster since it is petroleum based. Besides the thought of the other!!

Good luck and hope you get some sleep without to much discomfort.

Say what you want, but if you have a sore that is slow to heal, try a little Preparation H. It sounds funny but works really well.

I got a sore when I first started using the nasal mask. I used a fabric band-aid for a few nights and it went away. The plastic band-aids wouldn't let the mask seal, and it leaked into my eyes. I just worked with the straps (loosening and tightening)until I didn't get the sore anymore. Good Luck!!

Well, that stuff I do have in my medicine cabinet. I have several different ones of it....wonder if it makes a difference....including the Canadian version.

We used a little Neosporin and paper tape until we got the forehead thingy adjusted properly. As for Vaseline, it should never be used inside the nostrils as it has some sort of chemical that should not be inhaled. I learned that from my old days working for a pediatrician.

I feel compelled to add that you need to make sure the mask is clean (use mild dishwashing detergent) and that your skin is clean. That helps to prevent such problems from happening in the first place.

I clean my mask every day....and wash my face before going to bed.

But, I have a very oily face...especially forehead and nose.

Hey Dreamer, sounds like you and I are on the same time schedule ... I started having the same problem start the past week ... I'm trying my third mask now, a Mirage Quattro, and it seems to still seal with less pressure on my bridge, so hopefully my nose will catch a break. I have tried using some clear medical tape on my bridge lengthwise, and it has helped relieve some of the irritation ... I have to agree with others, key is getting a correct fitting mask and adjusting it as loose as leaks permit ...

Peace

pure aloe vera gel worked wonders for me-on a clean face, let it dry and it created a comfortable soothing barrier that also healed the sore-good luck!
